Is there a feather brand that works best for splicing, all my full length feathers barely have a quil to grab and peal. Do some brands have more quil and are easier to pull off?

After watching the video I made some up,was pretty easy. And forgive the bad ribbon on my burner. This is the first time and the sky is the limit.The addiction begins!

I have had a hard time with Natural feathers as well.  I have noticed most all of the Natural feathers stand almost straight up, and the domestic ones lay back more.  Must have something to do with the stress level.  Plus the natural feathers are usually thicker than the store bought ones.  

I use the same method as the video, except that I use Duco for my glue.  I cannot breath the vapors off of super glue.

I was thinking way to much(read the article in TBM) and that video made it alot simpler.

Saw the article, just haven't had time to read it.

I've been a fly tier for 40+ years so messing with feathers is pretty easy for me, that being said the membrane method is a P.I.A! but is probably the best method has far as cosmetics go. That being said I just cut the quills and butt them up together in the clamp. You just have to make sure the quills are pretty close to the same size and thickness so the feathers lock up together and it looks good on the shaft. You are just going to break them or loose them anyways and you can hardly tell the difference if you do it right.

This is not the best example. Just one I did this morning with sleepy eyes! It needs some cleaning up.

I started out butt splicing. In some ways it is easier. Just wasn't happy with the fit and finish. Then I tried stripping the membrane off of the feather to splice onto. Then by gluing a stripped membrane of the piece you splicing onto the main feather you are replacing membranes. This gives you the same height of membrane and it looks like it grew right out of the main feather! Just my preference. You might want to try booth and see what you think.  ("Results may vary")

I tried butt splicing just off looks at pictures back when I was making woodies a few years ago and I think the membrane method looks cleaner and doesn't seem too hard, but those trad 4 life splices up there look sweet.

I'm heading up to RMSgear in a couple weeks to grab some feathers to try out! I'm all geeked up to splice some up now! lol

Instead of peeling them(sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't} take a razor blade and lift the membrane with that. And as far as razor blades goes the standard Stanley box cutter blade is a dull butter knife compared to a old school double edge like a Wilkerson. Take my word for it and buy the double edge blades and tape one side with Duct tape so you don't hurt yourself...Huge difference!
