Doe taken with Stone Head

My brother Mark took a nice doe with an obsidian stone head. We have not had any snow here to speak of, and the deer movement has been kind of slow lately. There was no real push to feed like we typically see this time of year. He was quite pleased to get this deer with a self-bow. Mark waited for her to pass, before taking the quartering away shot. The head cut the edge of a rib longitudinally before stopping against the far shoulder. It ran about a hundred yards. During flight, the arrow was pulled/pushed back out and hung up on the rib cage. The laminated birch arrow broke at the thin notch required to secure the thick stone head. With the head stuck behind the hide, the arrow flopped about attached only to the unraveled sinew as the deer bound through the underbrush. This is the third or forth animal including a huge bison and whitetail buck that Mark has taken with a stone head. Mike

Mark used a 55# bow and the total arrow weight was about 850gr. The head weighed about 190gr and was much thicker than the flint heads he usually uses. Mark said it hit with a loud thud, like shooting an old rotten stump. I saw the head and was kind of skeptical since the edges were not tappered out as fine as the flint heads I've seen him use, but it got the job done and left a big hole like a Snuffer. Mike

Keefer- We are used to bee stings around here. Ha ha ha! Even with an 850 gr arrow, that bow still had enough handshock to shake his teeth. I think Mark will have to wait a month before he can shoot a bow again. Good thing the deer season is over now. Ha!

Thats pretty cool. It is not leagal to hunt with stone here and I have thought about it for Texas, this just adds a little more encouragment.

FerretWYO- A stone head is legal here in Illinois as long as it is at least 7/8 inches wide and is non-barbed. The head that Mark used on the doe was 1-1/4".

Nice job! The doe my son took with his hand chipped head had a huge hole in it also. He has stopped using anything but his own now. He's actually doing a class on knapping beginning Jan 28th at a local survival school. Tell Mark congrats for me!
