1970's Kodiak Magnum

Okay, this is my first post and unsure if this is the right forum so forgive me if it is haha. I bought my boyfriend a '70s Grizzly for xmas. He enjoyed shooting it so much that I began looking for a Bear bow for myself. I found the '70s Magnum on **** a few days ago and fell in love with it instantly. It's beautiful! So I was just wondering if anyone has had any complaints with the Magnum? and would it be worth the $180-$200 that it will end up being?

Depends on year and poundage but typically you can find the 70's magnums for under $125. The late 60's magnums typically demand more $$.

I've never owned one but I do have a Grizzly which I love. I have heard others say that they can be tough to shoot especially in the higher draw weights and for those with long draw lengths. I think the magnum would a good bow for someone with a short draw if it is in the 40 - 45# range. It is a pretty bow but I have shied away from it for fear the string pinch might be a problem for me.

If you are only using it for target archery, you may be better off looking for a longer bow.

Also, if you are just starting out take into serious consideration the draw weight. you do not want to solely bu a bow because its pretty.

As far as the Magnums go, seems as if people either love them or hate them, and its usually because of their length.

What's your draw length?

I have a #50 1970 K-Mag. It's definitely a nice shooting bow and a classic piece of history. With my 27" draw, the shorter length isn't an issue. Just as capable of a hunting bow as it was 40 years ago.

I got one a few years ago, off an auction site and paid 160.00 for it. Mine was made in 1969 and is in almost pristine condition. It's a good bow and shoots well but I'd like to find a 45 lb'er.

Thank you! The one I'm looking at is 40#. It's a lot shorter than the bow I'm shooting now, but since I was looking to increase my draw weight to 40# I thought it might be a good match for me.

And I may be a girl, but I would never buy a bow just because it is pretty. Any bow I buy, I am going to be able to shoot.

I'd say if your draw length is 28" or less, go for it. You can always sell it if it turns out not to be to your liking, and you'll probably get pretty much what you paid for it.

I have a few Kodiak Magnums but to be honest haven't spent a lot of time shooting any one of them. The last couple years I have used a 66 Kodiak Magnum for turkey hunting from a blind but have yet to get a shot with it. The bow was a gift from my long time hunting buddy that bought it new and never shot a animal with it that I know of. He passed away a year ago this month and taking a turkey with it would be something special for me.

They are neat little bows anyway.

That is quite the extensive and lovely collection you have there! I'm sorry to hear about your friend Shanks. My uncle passed away about a year and a half ago and when my aunt had found out that I starting getting into archery she gave me his bow. Even though its a compound and I'll probably never be able to shoot it (it's really heavy lol) it's nice to have something that was his.

I have a few K-Mags, and love them. I stand 5' 4" and draw 26.5". No pinch and they shoot beautifully. I have weights from twenty-five to fifty pounds. I think it is an excellent choice.

If you don't win the auction watch the classifieds on here. They come up on here a lot or post a wanted ad. Some other cool short bows too. The grizzly is a nice bow good choice for the boyfriend.
