New to Trad Gang

Hello everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Steve, 38yo, from Colorado (near the Denver area to be precise). I'm a transplant from Oklahoma a few years ago, and I'm a Cherokee citizen.

Growing up, I knew a few guys that made their own bows and arrows, but for the most part, most the people (indians included) I knew used compounds, so that's what I grew up using.

I have, in the past year or so, become interested in making a switch to traditional gear. I would like to eventually learn to make self-bows and wood arrows...mainly for the challenge, but also, because it seems to be something I'm deeply drawn to do, if that makes sense.

I have noticed throughout my life, that compound shooters really don't have a relationship with their equipment, and traditionalists seem to have a deep, almost spiritual connection with theirs.

My immediate family has had some bowyers, that did work for the tribe, before we moved to Oklahoma on the trail of tears, but I know little about who they were or what they did exactly, just that they made tribal bows. Maybe it's the blood that ran through them, that has been past down to me, and draws me to traditional, but something deep inside says, I'm going down the right path now.

So, I've sold my compound now, and I'm in the process of looking for a traditional bow to start with. I'm sure I'll find one soon enough, but just wanted to say hello, and this looks like a great site for a beginner to be a part of.

Hi Steve and welcome.My family were from east Tn/NC but i lived in Checotah, Ok for a cpl years.If you ever used to visit Tallassee ground when Lewis Proctor was alive then you ave more than likely seen me.That was my grounds for many years.Cherokee citizen here too but stuck with the guys on poarch creek rez in south bama now.I now know why our ancestors would walk hundreds of miles just to whoop some muscogee butt,lol.

Steve, welcome to a great place - you hit the nail on the head...and as Buddy said, many of us here are drawn together by that spiritual connection.

Welcome aboard and jump over the the bowyer bench and that is where the bow making is done.

Glass and wood bows. I made my first one this year. Along with the arrows.
