Hey all

I have seen quite a few pictures in the past of guys who have put fence posts and such in the ground and have deer using them regularly.  What the heck is that all about.  Are guys putting some sort of product on them???  I just dont see what makes that post more attractive than any other tree or fence post in the area.   Is anybody willing to tell me the secret?

Where I live and bowhunt in Texas, buck deer don't rub on fence posts.

Since they rub fence posts where you live, there must be something about fence posts they like.

I'm with Night Wing. Mostly mesquite trees where I'm at.

Blacktails here in the Pac. NW seem to prefer Alder trees and so do the Bull Roosevelt Elk....The only thing that rubs on fence post in this neck o' the woods, would be cows       ..........  the Bovine kind

I think it's a "scent signpost"  Just like every dog lifts its leg at a certain tree, some posts in certain areas get rubbed on.  Usually it's an old post that's very weather worn and "fibrous" I've seen an old power post that wasn't pressure treated that was extremely rubbed on. I think deer usually rub on these at night so they might not be the best spot to hunt.  It seems cameras set up on them show most use in the dark.

I have seen photos of rubs on all kinds of things....fence posts, sign posts, telephone poles 4X4's and so on. I think calgarychef is right in saying these are sign post scent rubs to mark an area or show dominance. You may not want to hunt right there but nearby may not be a bad idea....lol!

so what you guys are saying is that people arent putting a post there.  They found a post that the deer were already using and put a camera on it after the fact.  That makes a lot more sense.
