As some of you know, I live in an area where flint/chert is rather abundant. Through another post, I got to talking to Linc, who I met briefly at JLMBH 07. I offered to send some to him. As a thank you I get a knapping kit, complete with some obsidian blanks in the mail today.(instruction booklet included) Off I go on the quest to learn one of the skills I have always admired. Here is the result...Now, go easy. first attempt ever, but I think it is safe to say I will be making and hunting with stone in the near future. Thanks again Linc.

I just ordered a kit today from 3rivers. where did you get your kit at if you dont mind me asking? That looks real good too.

That point looks great Jamie.  Get it onto a stick and start practicing.  Hunting season is right around the corner now.

I've never been able to find any knappable stone around here.  Maybe a little road trip is in order....

Keith, I don't know of source for knapping material up this way either. I have found some Oriskany around the foundation at work but that stuff doesn't come in very big pieces.There is Onondaga somewhere west of me but have no idea where to even look.        Linc

Looking GOOOOD Jamie, daym nice for a first go, I'm able to turn a nice hunk of material into a pile of un-indentafible chips and powder LOL...FYI: All along the route of the Thru-way is the glacial fall line, meaning thats where alot of material can be found, north and south of there you can find scattered source's and node's. Also slate/shale is ALL over the state and some knapps real well... Here is a personal find from Orange County, NY..Hudson Valley Lanceolet made of Burkes Co. Pa. jasper, Knife blade, 5000-7000 years old.

Keith, I have two nice hickory staves aging. And whenever you wanna come down and go for a walk picking up rocks and stumping, let me know.

Dang I feel bad now. Linc sent me a care package a week or so ago and all I've done is stare at it. here you went ahead and made a head already, and not a bad looking one at that. Geesh...SHOW OFF!

That's pretty impressive Jamie, if I were you I'd get Keith up there, you show him the rock, he shows you how to make a selfbow.....sounds like a fair trade to me.....

Thanks everyone. Beginner's luck Im sure. The trick will be to do it again.
Im still amazed at the edge this stuff has....and how sore my fingers are.LMAO.
Just one more thing to become efficient with on my quest for self made equipment. Any suggestions and/or input would be welcomed for the next head.
Now to start making that hickory stave into a bow....
