Just got in yesterday am from my 10 day self-guided hunt in Kansas. Shared camp with my two best buds and had a great time all of the way around. We hunted hard daylight till dark almost everyday and saw some great bucks. With a day and a half left to hunt, I decided that the next decent buck I had an opportunity at I would try to take. The date was 11-11-11, kind of cool. I was hunting in a creek bottom from a ladder stand that overlooked a flat with a picked corn field to my northwest and a cut milo field to my east. After the deer leave the fields, they usually mill around in the bottoms and find some nice sheltered areas from the wind to bed. More to come.....

Had to actually work a little. Man, the nerve of these people! Anyway, back to the story. It had been a little slow that morning. I had seen several does and young bucks feeding in the fields and a few had filtered into the bottom and bedded. I was going to hunt in that bottom till around 10 am, then go hang a stand in a cedar wind row and try to get close to a giant ten that I had seen crossing out of it. About 9:30 I looked to my right into a thick little pocket that the does bed in and I saw a nice young eight point trolling around.

He ended up jumping a fence that separated the bedding area from the flat I was hunting. He continued across the flat directly in front of me at 12 yrds. I came to full draw and as he entered my shooting lane I let my bow down and decided to let him pass. I sat down as he meandered off. It was now 9:45 and as I looked back the way he came I saw a flash of antler as the sun glinted off of it.

I could tell immediately, that he was a better buck than the first one. He was trolling the bedding area headed south, which would take him away from me. I grunted to get his attention and he turned and headed to the fence where the other buck had crossed. As he stood at the fence looking into the flat I knew I would shoot him if he gave me a chance. He finally, jumped the fence and headed along the same path the other buck had taken. As he approached my shooting lane, I drew and anchored. As he entered the lane, I mouth grunted to stop him, pulled through to engage my clicker and the shot was on the way. Here is a pic of my view of the shooting lane. The buck was standing in between the two small branches at the time of the shot.

I saw the hit and it looked good. He ran hard for about 50 yrds and headed back south to the creek, taking my arrow with him. I figured I would give him some time, so I waited about thirty minutes or so. While I waited I gave thanks to the Lord for such a perfect moment as this. Only someone who hunts as we do could truelly appreciate the awesomeness of these moments.  I climbed down and began to follow up his trail in my sock feet, just in case.  About 15 yrds down the trail I found this:
