snuffers are Excellent broadheads that are too dang easy to get scary sharp.  if you can't razor sharpen a good 3-blade broadhead, you need to get schooled about a proper sharpening method.  i thought i was getting my woodsmans damn sharp 'til ron @ kme showed me a few things that got 'em truly scary razor sharp.  

i've got a six pack of 160 grain snuffers coming that WILL get super sharpened and hopefully i'll be able to deliver one into a deer or hog come january @ solana.

so in the long run, like most things in life, sharpening all manner of trad broadheads is about learning and properly applying good techniques.  plain and simple.

If snuffers were "crap" then they wouldn't have been around for 20+ years.

Well....I know 160 gr Snuffers have put quite a few animals down over the years across this country. A good 10 mil bastard file, crok stik and leather strop will get them sharp. My hunting buddy Bamboo uses Stones and gets his Woodsmans scary sharp. It will work on a Snuffer also.

Take the time and learn how to sharpen them correctly. Getting the right angle, proper pressure and then finish them off on leather. For those fellas who really can't learn how to sharpen trad style broad heads, then maybe you should go back to replaceable blade heads.

Looks like that dude that thinks they are junk turned tail...Snuffers are a cornerstone of traditional bowhunting.  

They are under new ownership and Bisquit and Todd Smith wil make them better than they have been since Roger and Ryan were putting them together out back.  

I keep this in my favorites since it comes up so often.  It is a lot more fun with Roger watching over your shoulder    


  Sharpening Snuffers the Rothhaar Way  
 

Ron from KME wrote an   excellent article about sharpening 3 blades a few issues back in Trad Archers World.  He likes to strop with a LONG piece of cardboard.

I have the Snuffer tamer, and know a lot of folks like it, but for me the best way to get them super sharp is very simple:
1. The first time sharpening a head or after its been through a deer and into the ground, black the edges with a marker and then file until all the marker is gone - do no more than two or three strokes and rotate the head. Your edges should now be even.
2. Finish step 1 with just light pressure, rotating the head every stroke or two.
3. Then, what made a difference in how sharp I got my snuffers was the quality of the stones I used. Get the highest quality coarse, medium and fine stones you can find(I use the ones that came with my KME) and laying two blades on the stone at the time go through the coarse, medium and fine stones and you will be amazed at how sharp they will get and very easy to do.

You can file sharpen them or get fancier if you want, they are absolute killers either way.  I like to use a large file and finish with a KME ceramic stone, but there are lots of good tutorials on this site, have fun watching those a pick and method that works for you.

Well, as of today (the 17th of Nov.) I am unable to see the post by the El Gran J character but I can see many of you are responding to something he wrote.  

About Snuffers:  I have always used the Zwickey 4-bladed Deltas with great success.  This year I decided to try the Snuffer and dug out a half dozen I had bought more than 20 years ago.  I had no problems getting them plenty sharp with a file and a fine Arkansas stone.  No shot yet but I am confident they will pass muster when the time comes.

Two weekends ago I was hunting with a relative and his buddies, (wheel guys).  During a break at lunch they were showing each other their setups, and comparing their mechanical broadheads.  I pulled my 160 Snuffer out and it was just like that crocodile Dundee movie, "Now THIS is a broadhead!"
I use snuffers because I know firsthand what they do.

Snuffers leave blood trails you slip on if you step on the trail! Be careful! Blood is slippery when fresh!
