i was flipping thru 3rivers and saw the pillow deer target and wondered if HAY could be placed inside to stop an arrow. i have heard of people using cotton or grocery sacks stuffed tightly. any suggestions on a filler or comments on hay?? thanks alot,   seth

Maybe go get some of the expandable foam and spray it in your pillow case.

I never thought of that one. Have you tried it? I'm sure it would stopo an arrow fine, as I found out how tough it is when I tried cutting some overflow. Will it let go of the arrow?

Bags (like old garbage bags) or strectch wrap work great. I'd go for that before I used hay.

Tightly baled hay works OK for awhile if kept dry. I doubt stuffing hay by hand into a bag type target would stop anything other than an arrow from a childs bow.

My feed sack targets are stuffed with all kinds of plastic (bags, tarps, matress bags, etc). They can get wet and won't rot. When a bag wears out I jam the whole thing into another bag.

For the past 5 years i have almost exclusively used plastic grocery bags or any other plastic that is similar, to include shrink wrap type plastic that comes off of shipping pallets, etc.  

The plastic is easy to deal with, free, can be recycled, stops the arrows quickly and with no wear on the finish of the arrows.  

If the pastic bags get shot up i just re-arrange them in the bag and they are good to go again.  

The plastic shrink wrap that comes off of pallets works great but is much denser and heavier.  Its really not needed.

Sure.  Just stuff it tight.  But it's probably going to rot as it will hold in moisture.  I have one filled with old nylon screening and another with everything and anything I could find.  Plastic grocery bags, plastic wrap, poly feed bags.

I have a little rabbit 3-D U-Stuff It target that is stuffed with the closed cell foam Dell puts around their PC's.

Two Words: Shrink Wrap!



Go green and recyle. Sears, Walmart, anyone who gets skids shipped in now come in shrink wrap.

I jam it into the 40x40 Ames Pillow burlap target with deer painted on both sides... and shoot for a yeare or 2 or 3 with field points!

Dependin on how hard you pack them...they stop almost anything!

Been having a hard time finding the Ames pillow target this year? Is that the Pillow Target you're referencing?

I collect shredded papers from our huge shredder at work. You just have to keep it dry. It'll stop an arrow dead.

I like this style.  They hold up better than foam 3-D and come with a repair patch.  Just add more filler if it gets shot up.

Modestly priced and last me at least 2-3 years with the two sides...

I've had the U-Stuff-it targets too... but the blonde straw color of the deer sorta didn't suit me...I got some acrylic paint and sprayed it grey...

We had a makeshift range in my buddy's woods and his kid comes home from college at T-giving, with leaves off, looks down in the woods and looks at us and says, "Who put Ijor down in the woods?"

We never quite felt right shooting that target afterwards!      

I use coffee bean burlap bags stuffed with the plastic grocery bags. Other plastic material works works as well but the plastic grocery bags seem to work best because they are lighter and won't scuff the finish on my wood arrows. I place a piece of carpet in and at the rear of the bag as insurance to prevent pass-throughs. When the burlap wers out I simply stuff the same filler into a fresh bag. I shoot at least four times a week and my targets last about a year. Plastic grocery bags are very light. My two year old can carry my coffeee bean bag target by himself.
