Was out in the back yard shooting after dark, with the porch flood light on my target bag. There I am, minding my own business and doing one of the safest things I can think of doing. Just shooting some arrows with a safe backstop, not a care in the world. Out of nowhere (well actually out of a big oak tree) came an acorn. I'm too darned tired to figure out how high it would have to fall from to reach terminal velocity, but this thing was coming RDF (real darned fast). Put a gash in my outstretched bow arm and cut a little artery so that I was doing a good imitation of a well hit deer. A few seconds later one hit the roof of the little tool shed I was standing near not more than a foot from my head. I heard a voice saying "Run, Forest, RUN!"

The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Stay inside for a while the squirrels are armed and gunning for you.

Now THAT's funny. Earlier I had one sitting on the retaining wall behind me with a good hill backstop behind him and I was seriously considering the shot. My wife feeds them, though and if I shot one of her pet squirrels, there wouldn't be enough of me left to fertilize a crop of weeds.

Forget acorns. Watch out for those Black Walnut trees. Those things make thuds hitting the ground. I'm sure they have ruined many a day for squirrels after falling.

There are so many falling here that I just ignore them. Never thought about them hurting as long as my hat is on. Now, I do worry about the hedge apples. I watched a squirrel clean out a walnut tree. He went from one to another cutting them all down.
If it's in your way, move it.
