Jeff,
You asked how it sounds.
It depends on where I rub and how hard. If I rub it down the middle of the grooves, it is kind of a harsh CLACKCLACKCLACK, especially if I bear down too hard. But if I get over to the end of the grooves, and use a lighter touch, it is more of a whirr noise, which is what I would guess I am looking for.
I think if I sanded the points between the grooves off to a rounder tip, it would be less clacking. This would look more like your call, with not so prominent ridges.
As I say, I am looking forward to your video to see what yours sounds like, and how you use it.
Good luck with the hunt. Beware stray tigers.

Man I went and made three of these since yesterday..Even made one before Church service this morning..I found the longer and thinner a tine is that you use as the striker it makes a more hollow sound...I had one tine that was webbed a little and it makes a really good tone and I can rest my thumb in the webbing kind of like a spoon...I wished I had more antler to work with cause these are fun to make but stink up the shop...I should of let the antler soak in water overnight to help kill the smell..It smells like a dentist office where someone has a bad cavity when you are drilling...  :goldtooth:

WOW! I love learning new things like this. I did not know that deer did the clicking sound. Love the use and looks of these antler calls. Hope to see the video...
Do does and bucks make the clicking sound and how do you know if the sound is right if you have never heard the real thing. Perhaps I have heard and never realized it was a deer...

Izzy

Had a doe bed next to me while in a tree tonight and heard her "clicking". Fifteen minutes later I saw 2 big bucks right where she walked to. The sound she made sounded just like the call I made after seeing Jeffs thread and it seems she was using it to locate the bucks. Thanks again.

This is very cool, but since I have never knowingly heard a deer make these sounds, what kind of rhythm do you use with the call? Just one 'click', several in a row, what kind of tempo, etc. I'm anxious to give this new toy a try. Thanks for the info in advance.

Pat,
I heard deer make the clicking sound on several hunts and to be honest now would be a great time to use one...The noise is usally so low it's hard for a human to pick up even having deer with in about 15 yards from ya...Now I have also heard deer when the woods were dead quiet at about 50 yards doing a more heavy "CLICKING" sound and if you make a few of these you can do one with about 4 or 5 grooves in it or about 8 to 10....Also search videos on deer sounds and turn your valume up loud on your computer and close your eyes and listen to the sounds...I've heard does and bucks use these noises and very soft most the time...Those grunt tubes are sometimes too loud and like someone else has stated already when you are blowing it sometimes moisture will get on the reed and you have to take them apart and end up dropping the reed,"O" ring or the mouth piece out of your stand...Only thing with this is you are moving your hands but it's a neat little piece of gaget to have in your haversack...My two girls have been playing with the ones I made all weekend...Have fun and make's a great gift for us traditional bowhunters..

Mudd

I can hardly wait to see the video of it being put through it's paces.

I made my forth one tonight cause I haven't had a chance to go hunting yet and getting the urge to make something traditional...I'm taking some vacation time next week and hope to get out and try these new calls...I've found that those really flat spike buck antlers make a really nice striker to run across the antler call with the grooves cut in it..You can make those cuts useing a triangler file or the edge of a reguler file..I made some useing a chainsaw file for a rounded groove...I'm running out of antler pieces and looking at my Mounted Bucks and just wondering how they would look if I cut their antlers off to make some more calls?        :goldtooth:
