I'm lucky enough to live back in the woods and my shop is in the woods as well.
Once Oct.1st rolls around, I've learned to keep a bow in the shop and one eye out the door!
Put lots of venison in the freezer that way.
I've been watching this bunch of turkeys stroll up and down my driveway for the last few weeks, so I went and got my turkey tag yesterday. In Illinois it's acceptable to shoot either sex in the fall during deer archery season.
I've been noticing this "Jake" running with this bunch of hens and chicks, and waited until I had a chance at him today walking past my shop.
About half way through cleaning "him" I noticed that he didn't have any spurs, but had a nice 7" beard!
Oops! Wait a minute!
I just got one of the 15% of hens that have beards, and it's a nice one at that. That kink is in there naturally, so I guess it makes her non-typical?
Now for some venison under the ol' apple tree........

When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Saw a bearded hen today while on the stand, too bad our fall season is closed again this year.

I've got a couple of hens around my place with beards. I hope I have as much luck as you had with that one, congrats.

Allan, you're always welcome in my camp - wherever I am.

Here is what I saw this morning at 7:15 from the "living room blind" and the upstairs "spare bedroom blind".
