What's the advantage of a tomahawk over a quality small axe/hatchet, such a Gränsfors Bruks Wildlife?
How does your 'hawk handle normal camp chores compared to an axe/hatchet?

Being able, in theory, to replace the handle in the field?  Made for throwing?  Just for the cool factor?

I would say it's a cross between easily replaceing the handle and the much lighter weight of the hawk head. Most tommahawk heads weigh under a pound where most hatchet heads are 1 1/2 - 2 pounds.

I had a little "mouse hawk" that weighed 14 ounces handle and all!!!!! SWEETEST Little Thing.....I never should have given it away.....   :rolleyes:

It's more enjoyable to forge your own hawk

JC that is some fine work there. The pipe hawks aren't as versatile as a hammer poll, but they purty up real nice. Good mojo.

For fancy or seriously serviceable hawks look up Beaver Bill Keeler in Ohio. He has everything from very plain camp or belt axes to the finest fanciest presentation iron.

i have great rail road spike hawk made by Skillet that i carry alot, it was a gift from Woodchucker and the crew on the hunt last year.

here is one built for me by a good friend of mine. it has a kind of blunt spike for ripping apart stumps and wood without gettinf hung up, also is
razor sharp!

Tippit i agree i would like to forge my own.
Having no forge or any no how in forges hampers me making the head myself.

I hope to get a rough shapped one that i can do the clean up on.

Im wanting one like straitshot has. Being forged or heat treated if its poured it should do well.
I really like the pipe ax look, but dont care if its a pipe ax.

Been thinking about a hawk for a while. Have been admireing the Shrew hawk. I like how it has almost a hammer on the back side. If anyone else has any feed back on it, how they've used it (how much abuse it can take) any info would be appreciated. thanks... matty

Native.  the Shrew hawk is inexpensive and really fun.  I now have two.  Been carrying the first one a bunch since I got it.  Use the blunt side for pounding stakes (tent).  Use the sharp side for bopping squirrels, once the nutter makes contact.  Besides,....never know when a griz might attack me here in WI and I need it to protect myself.
