Cool arrows and heads!

Question?
Do you practice with those heads once you get them mounted to your arrow ?   and if you do does it make them dull?  How do you " resharpen" them?

Sorry for so many questions just curious.

Yes. I shoot them into a 6 foot round bail. I have on farm. I never had them dull that way. But then I don't shoot them alot (the ones I hunt with). But you can reknapp edge if needed though.

I have killed 7 deer now with "stone' and my selfbows.
I want to say someday ..."I shot the biggest Buck in Ohio with Flint point"

One thing I must stress when making Stone" pointed arrows.

MAKE SURE THAT THE TAPER FROM HEAD TO SHAFT IN FLAT. IF ITS BLUNTED OUT WITH WRAP ..it will not penetrate well.

This is a problem with most "FIRST" arrows.

Get them well tappered and smooth and they will work very well.
Also try a little melted Bees Wax on the tapper. A nice flow!

So are those heads legal? I know in NY they can't be barbed.

They are legal in Ohio.

anyone know where I could get heads like that, know a good knapper.

It's an absolutely pointless reg. I'm sure that once upon a time a very smart lawmaker decided that the most pressing issue of the day was to make sure that people couldn't use barbed arrow points because they might get stuck if you try to pull them out of yourself after an accident.

Guess what? THEY ARE RAZORBLADES!  A barb is the least of your worries. It's stupid.

I'd like to know if ANYONE has actually ever been ticketed for a "barbed" broadhead.

It sounds a bit like the "Well, if cops catch you with BlackTalon ammunition they will confiscate it" urban legend.

And I'm new to traditional bow hunting. Now you guys have me wanting to use knapped arrowheads and handmade arrows, lol.  I can, in no way, knapp an arrowhead like that to consistent sizes and shapes and the things cost like $25 a piece at 3RiversArchery.com  

It's something that's going to have to wait a while. It looks like fun.

I have never shot a deer with one yet, but i would like to hear from anyone that has.I have read that they kill real well but, they wont come anywhere near shaveing hair off your arm.I do know that they penetrate just as deep if not more than reguler broadheads in a target and they make a very loud wack when they hit a bag target for sure.
I do bone, ivory,antler and stone carvings and i have several guys that trade me points for some of my carvings.I can knap them myself too if i have stone but we dont have much good stone for that where i live.

How do you know if the arrow will fly right  i mean can you practice with them i have one but im scared to take it into the woods because i dont know what to expect

If I still lived in Northwest Arkansas then I would pick you up some chert. Up there, Beaver Lake has beaches that are nothing but chert and it's all along the headwaters of the White River.

Might find a Trad Ganger up around there that can send you some in a USPS Flat-rate box or something.

I just know it sucked when I was kayaking in the river and forgot that the beach was made of razorblades.

I shoot mine into a styrofoam target or a cardboard box filled with wadded up paper and plastic grocery bags.

You can also shoot them into a hay bale. Never tried the 3d target with one but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt the head as long as it didn't come off in the target.

I shoot every arrow I plan to hunt with. If they don't shoot well they don't hunt.  I use a large ruberized foam block to test shoot all of my hunting arrows.
Stone heads are easy to resharpen with a small pressure flaker if needed.

Obsidian can be made to be much sharper than steel.

Here's a blurb I found:  "Obsidian also has a use as a surgical scalpel.   Because the obsidian is a glass (amorphous - without any internal structure), it can be honed to an extremely sharp edge.  Steel scalpels can be very sharp but are limited to the structure of the crystal boundaries.  In glass, there is no such boundary and the cutting surface can be much finer."
