Most of the time I shoot through.  On this hunt the deer had been hunted really hard all season (Jan hunt) and were very skidish!  

She was so on edge even after I let her settle down and browse some that she jumped down a bit on the shot.  I hit the other shoulder and went through, but just the BH came out the other side.  The exit hole was HIGHER than the entrance that is how much she moved.  Bent the arrow big time!

I debated on leaving the arrow in her for the photo, but I wanted an "ol school" looking photo.  DavyCrockett (SHEP)took the photo.  

I was shooting a 2020, 260 grain STOS.  Heavy arrow.  I believe in the 3:1 BH think it is the best.  Will be trying out some Tuffheads this season.

If you plan to shoot seated, really practice beforehand.  I discovered the "trick" with the shoulder and has really helped me when I get in a situation like that of a "boat seat stand" that are just hard IMHO to shoot a longbow out of.

This will be my first season hunting with a "Hill Style" American flat bow.

One piece BamaBow Elite 65", 49# @ 26" draw.

Shooting home-made Port Orford cedar arrows, 27" BOP, 160 gr STOS broadheads, 500grain total weight.

Bob,  I get pass-throughs on almost every deer I shoot,  I use moderately heavy arrows around 550 - 650 grains.  I like 2 blades...Hill's, Hunter Heads, Zwickey, Grizzly, Concord's(great for the price)...they all work well.  I've shot many deer through both shoulders, broadside and the arrow fell on the ground off-side.  The only time I don't blow the arrow completely through is if the animal is moving like walking, running, etc.  Moving tissue is harder to penetrate, but I still poke the broadhead out the far side....

Wow, great pics ... I appreciate the info.  How mnay pounds is your 66 inch bow?  Also, Dragonheart, thanks for your info as well.  

The reason I started this thread is I hear of so many guys shooting Hills, but I was not sure how many hunted with them.  I hunt with a few trad guys, all but one hunts with as short a bow as they can get.  I have a love of the long D bow.  My Deathwish is 68 inches and is just a joy to shoot.  It is similar to a Hill bow.  I will hunt the heck out of her this fall and am looking at maybe getting a Hill bow, perhaps a Wesley.

Not a "Hill" but hill style 70" 64#. Shot deer from the ground, blinds and treestand since 1980.

Honestly Bob,

anything around 66" to 68" isn't really noticeable in the field if you're on the ground because of the versatility of canting the bow.  In a treestand, sometimes 68" is too long to maneuver.  

I shoot around 64# nowadays....used to shoot real heavy 80# and up, but realized before I got too old and hurt to back the weight down a bit.  It didn't seem to hurt penetration any....lol

September the 30th I'll see what kind of penatration I can get on an alligator. Going to send Nate a piece of leather to make an armguard. Oh Nate if you get a call from a Andy in SC he's a friend of mine I assisted him on his gator hunt last year and he's doing the same for me this year. He's a gun hunter but I have been letting him play my Schulz bow and I think he's getting into it and I'm trying to talk him into getting you to make him a bow!

I have 2 Wesley Specials. Both are 68" long and draw 65# at 28" draw I also have a Cheetah at 68" long and draws 55# at 28". I do almost all my hunting/shooting with these bows. I have several other longbows but I don't shoot them as much as these 3 bows.

I have used and took two does with my howard hill redman 50# at 27" last year from the ground 62" long.

I've been shooting a 70" HH  Redman, 60#@ 28" for most the summer and will be using it this fall.

Aligator armguard, that just sings!

Never had a problem with penetration.  Either an 80# @ 27" Wesley Special 68" or Autumn T.D. 92# @ 27" 70".  Shooting Hickory shafts with 200 Gr. Ace heads total weight 900 to 1000 grains.

Here is a small doe from last year.  Total penetration with 2016, WW broadhead.  Howard Hill Big five string follow that was made into a takedown by Jack Harrison.  About a 10 yrd shot out of a tree.  66" bow, 53# @ 26".  

That is a great photo ... and we use similiar poundages and arrows ...

Hill bows only for deer.

Same for elk, bear, wild boar, goats, sheep, rabbits, moose, coyotes, rock chucks. . . you just can't beat them as a hunting weapon.

My 66" 60@29 HH Halfbreed is the only bow I own and that's what I hunt with.  Here - lookie...
