Doubt there are too many guides that hunt cats without dogs, though if you ask, some may work with you.  Without dogs, your options are either cut a track and try to walk it down or call one in.  Both have quite low success rates, but can be done.

Why hunt mountain lions!!??? Lets see,they are there, it;s legal,they are absolutely at the top of the food chain ,they are not omnivorous they are carnivores , it is as tough a hunt as you can get and they are absolutely great to eat!

Pat, you hunt mountain lions with dogs because without a dog to tree 'em, you'll never catch them! And even with hunting dogs, you are going to be wore out running up and down some of the steepest, nastiest country you could ever imagine.

I'm from the Reno,NV area and we have the big cats around here.  Two killed in my area within the last three years.  The last was a young tom that was waaay to curious for his own good.  He would even sit in a cottonwood tree, scratching and peeing on it that was right outside my garage.  He met his demise when he jumped on two of my neighbors dogs down at a park on the Carson River and the neighbor shot him.  This cougar put a pretty good laceration on my Doberman cross one night when I turned her loose on him.  These big cats are very quick and cover a lot of ground fast.

Quite a few cats around my area.  They have lots of 'em in California that drift over into Nevada. I've never actually gone on a guided hunt and don't know any outfitters, but don't count Nevada out as there's plenty of cats here.

A lion is definitely on my "want to kill" list. I live in Montana, so it is hopefully just a matter of paying my dues,

I have quite a few customers that eat lions.For those that do,it is important to know that lions get trichinosis, just like pigs and bears so it is important to cook it well.It should also be pointed out that lion harvest quotas are very well controlled in almost every state that allows hunting.Here,lion harvest quotas change each season based on current conditions,last years harvest,age structure etc..Quotas are further broken down by male and female.

Thought I'd throw in a fresh picture.

Lions don't do the damage to deer and elk populations that wolves do because they are solitary hunters but they do impact the populations.  Large Toms do (so I'm told by experienced houndsmen) sometimes select mature mule deer bucks to kill seemingly for the sport as does and fawns are readily available and easier prey.  As previously stated, they have no other natural predators (I do consider myself a natural predator), so their populations go virtually unchecked but for age and disease.  Also as noted above lion flesh is freakin delicious.  It ranks in my top three north american game meats with Elk and Mt. Goat.  Finally, the chase for cats, after dogs is one of the most demanding hunts I have ever been on (on a par with Mt. Goat).  Following dogs on foot that are on a hot track, through the brush and canyons at 1,000,000 mph (okay maybe not but it's a hectic pace to say the least) tore my body and my gear to shreds.  It took two full winters before I got a chance at a cat I was satisfied with.  I relished every second of it.

I need to get a better paying job.  LOL

Been on my list for years as well. Don't know if I will ever be able to since heart surgery.

I have seen two in the wild. One in TX while hog hunting and one in NM while bear hunting. I can tell you it's the only animal in the wild that has ever gave me the willies..

Cougar meat is some of the best eating there is! Also helps control the deer and elk predation. They are having a huge impact here in Oregon because the numbers of cats are so high since the ban on hunting with dogs.
I have pics of many animals from my trail cams, with scars and claw marks down there sides and one two with major bite marks.
Hunting Cougars is Good for many reasons.
