I have a Horne's hunter combo, longbow limbs 53@28" I draw 28.5 split finger, with glove 8 strand DF 97, 16 in the loops
I used Stu's calculator and it said I could shoot a CE heritage 350 w/ 29.50" 100gr insert 250gr point 3x5in feathers

I actually says this is a few pounds week. I am not getting good arrow flight from this setup. I have not bareshafted as I am short on arrows.

I have GT expedition hunters in 3555 5575 on hand to attempt to find the correct setup.

I am getting erratic arrow flight on most shots with the CE. I can actual shoot where I want to but as the arrow flies towards the target I watch the tail end wobble in the air.

The longbow has a fairly shallow throat. When I grip the handle I place the swell in the heal of my hand. I lightly wrap my fingers around the rise. I use a straight back draw with the bow arm towards the target. I have a solid anchor with finger in corner of mouth and pointer finger palm bone on my check bone. I started using a anchored release, not moving my hand, and found I got better flight and accuracy.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

The one problem I have with the GT arrows is the weight themselves. I would like to shoot at least 550 grains.

I have always found the arrow calc to provide data that does not exactly match my bow.  Could be something to do with my release, or an error in some data, but my 56# Horne loves cx 250's at 29.25 with 50 gr brass insert and 175 grain head, or cx 150s at 28.75 and 225 up front with factory inserts.  I would think the 350's would be stiff at that length.

I shoot a pronghorn close to the same set up and I used 400 axis cut at 29.5 with a 100 grain insert and 150 bh.  Fly great!

My combo hunter with 46# likes full length 3555 with 225 up front.

My recurve limbs at 53#s is almost tuned with CE250 at 29.5 and 200 up front but might be a little weak still.

I have several bows in that weight range and I shoot CE 150's 30" and 250's 31" ... Both fly great and my draw is about 28" ... I'm shooting 150grn and 175 grn BH's. I really think the 350's at 29.50 would be too stiff.

145gr tip (going to be using 150gr woodsmans when hunting)
5gr brass washer
100gr brass insert
32" long with 5" parabolic feathers
Total weight is 657 grains.

I'm shooting them out of a 60" 52@28 Black Creek longbow and they fly pretty darn good  

Sorry that arrow is way too stiff even full length. I owned a Horne a while back and it was 52#s at 28"s and so right about 54#s at my draw. I shot a Heritage 150 cut to 29.5"s with 225 grains up front plus a footing so right about 240 grains up front. I think you are so overspined that you are getting opposite results. I am shooting a set of custom ILF recurve limbs that absolutely smoke and am shooting a .500 spine cut to 29.5"s and a 190 grains up front for perfect arrow flight as long as I do my part, just as an example. Carbons are a different animal, throw out the calculators and use some common sense. A 35/55(.500 spine) is designed to shoot out of compounds that are just that, around 35 to 55#s with 100-125 grain point, so figure a less efficient bow(recurve-longbow of near the higher end of that weight range)  will shoot that same arrow with a lot more point weight. Just basing arrow selection on that fact alone, why would a trad bow of 50 to even 70#s shoot an arrow designed to be shot of of 60-70# compounds, makes no sense, even when left full length a 300 spine arrow would would need 400 grains or more to soften it out of a 60# recurve. Sorry to rant but this is not rocket science. Shawn

Thanks for your reply and the way you put it. I have been shooting for a long time and can never seem to dial in on the best arrow. Usually it comes by chance.
I wish I had some experienced guys to walk over and work this together!

I started working with the 3555
30"
100gr brass insert(these are 1.25 in length)
and a 250gr point.
Results were very soft and erractic.
The problem with dropping point weight is I don't want and arrow under 550.
?????

I shoot a Horne's combo hunter long bow 51@28" with a 29" draw and get good arrow flight with full length 35/55 3-5" feathers and 250gr up front.

Why do ya want to shoot over 10gpp. anyway? I have killed plenty of stuff with 8-9gpp. even some big bodied deer. That is what I shoot all the time. You can also go to a .400 spine and leave it long 30"s or a tad more and go with 325 grains or a tad more up front, you will get the weight ya want for sure and still get good flight. Shawn

cut a little off that shaft, you want loose much weight but the will stiffen up for you. or lighten up on the weight a little. if you dont want to lighten or go shorter go 400

Smokin Feathers is correct, shorten it a tador go with less point weight. 1/4" makes quite a bit of difference with carbons. Shawn

i like the beman hunters outa that weight in the 500 spine with 200grn up front at 30"long they shot really well for me

Shawn I like the heavier arrows for a couple reasons.
One I want to find one arrow for this bow and it will be the one I use for everything I do from hunting ptarmigan to moose.
A heavier arrow feels better in the bow hand when I shoot.
And lastly I have read so much on this and that, I think the heavy arrow theroy has just stuck in my head.

With that said, last night I was able to shoot
5575 at 30.5
100gr brass
175fp
3 4" non helical feathers
and the I could shoot the bare shafts and the fletched together at 23-25yds.

I only had one bareshaft though and I want to shoot these more to make sure the results are consistant.

What are your thoughts on helical versus a very small degree of offset?

Oh an on my previous post I was mistaken. I have 50grn inserts in the 3555

It sounds like you are doing this, but I'd encourage you to heed the advice given - especially from Shawn.

His advice concerning carbons helped me a lot in the past.
