Looking at starting to build some wood arrows but i have no clue as to what tools and supplies i need. Could everyone post of the list of tools and stuff that they use.

Bare minimum is a taper tool, fletching jig, and glue.

You'll need feathers, points, nocks.


Stains, paints, clear finishes are for sealing and decorating.

Youtube is a great resource, so are the how-to's here.

If you only have one fletching jig as do I ditch the glue and buy you a roll of Bohning fletch tape. I can fletch a dozen in an hour. With glue you gotta wait 15-20 minutes before you can move the clamp and 1 arrow can take an hour waiting on glue to dry. I go back and dot the front and rear of the fletches with Duco glue to keep anything fron getting up under the tape. Not lost a feather yet.

Eventually, you're going to want a spine tester and grain scale.  That's the only way to guarantee that your arrows are well matched in terms of spine and physical weight. I don't like the pencil sharpener type taper tools much.  Prefer a taper board and power sanding disk.

Thanks guys. i have a grain scale already. will the pencil sharpener type taper tool work for starting out. Wont hunt with wood this year but it would be nice to start collecting over the winter.

kswelder: If you have access to a table sander you can make a tapering jig for about 2.00 and forget the pencil sharpener.

anyone can build superb woodies for very little outlay, or you can spend hundreds of dollars on optional tooling, expensive tooling and peripheral arrow making gear.

here's an economical list that will get you building with the best ...

1.  11/32" wood shafts
2.  11/32" pencil sharpener tapering tool for shaft nock and point ends

3a. min wax gloss wipe on polyu to seal and protect
3b. 100% cotton t-shirt material for the wiping pad
3c. a rubber glove (surgical, dishwashing, whatever) to keep the goop off yer arrow shaft holding hand
3d. 4/0 steel wool to buff out between coats

4.  11/32" nocks
5.  duco or fletchtite for nock and feather end gluing
6.  bohning fletching tape - a MUST have!
7.  grayling or bohning pro fletcher
8.  precut feathers
9.  11/32" points
10. hot melt glue for  points (melt with a candle or butane lighter or gas stove)

quite optional: water or resin based stain for the arrow cap area, sharpie pens for cresting and a variable speed drill to spin the shaft.
