Sweet arrows, Charlie! Splicing looks great, my first and only so far, not so much...

Larry M sent me a dozen barrel tapered shafts as a gift recently.
I fletched them with all natural turkey feathers, cock feather dyed red. Nothing fancy here but they look and fly amazing!
Thanks again Larry!

Not as fancy as a lot of these, but this is my normal workup.

Tree Killer,
That see-thru effect behind and under the fletching is stunning!
As is the cresting over the stain.

Makes me want to plan ..... really plan  .... what I will do next.

My first efforts were 100% inspired by reading this thread.

not great .....  but as a first effort I was happy with my results.

As it's been said before  .... Great thread !!

Live in the heart of NYC .....   cresting has brought living in an apartment to a standstill !

These have been shot a lot.
But shows the fletch colors I used.

The cresting combinations are endless!
but,
I think I like    ... without a crown dip  ....better than with. It's nice to see wood under the feathers.

It's hard to show the green...

The grey is very elegant Hobow

my latest ..... been shot some .....

trying to figure out a pattern which fits the "color combination" of my mind's eye. (think Scottish plaids)
btw,
I found a great paint. The enamels never really worked that great for me. i.e.. on these particular pre-finished shafts  enamel had a difficult time covering over the dark stain. ( I since have stopped buying pre-finished shafts with the dark stain finish, in favor of shafts I have stained myself.)
Ok, about the great paint .....
Enter Home Depot / Behr paint samples.
Water base ... but with primer built in .......
and this is the good part.
Samples are 8oz. and cost about $3. They will make up any colors for the same price.
I actually brought different colored feathers and spent time matching feathers to colors using their paint charts.
(that was different for Home Depot to see)
The paint covered very well, and did not need a second coat. It covered, over the dark stain of a prefinished shaft, where the Testors would not.
Final finishing with 4 or 5 coats Minwax wipe on poly, (Japan Dryer added to the poly, to speed drying, ((like 10 drops per oz of paint))
The oil based poly wipe on minwax Satin gave good results.

I think I am through with oil based paints for cresting.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

You just can't beat ebony on douglas fir.  Nice looking arrows David.

More importantly is how you prepare the shafts to paint them.

Thanks Mike, I agree.
