So I'm getting back into trad after being out of it for about a year and I'm just wondering what everyone is pulling and slinging...I have shot compound for many years and am completely confident in my skills with it...with my recurve not so much...I picked up a Hoyt Gamemaster II at 51#at my draw(27") and I'm throwing a GT 55/75 28" 550gr total...tipped with a magnus buzzcut 2 blade...I've got 250 grains up front with my brass insert and my head...I'm just wondering if this is sufficient for bear and deer...that's all I really hunt around here and I will keep my shots to 25yds and less as that's what I can keep 3 shots in a softball at...any input you guys can help me with I really appreciate!!

Stumpkiller

I pulling a 56# at my draw length (30") Browning Explorer and pushing a 30-1/2" BoP Douglas fir shaft of 640 gr all up with a Stos 130 gr head.

Sounds like you're all set, though I've mixed feelings about serrated heads.  Don't know about Buzzcuts, but if you can keep 'em sharp and place them where you want you're probably gold.

Trumpkin the Dwarf

550? outa a 51# recurve? Stick it in the sweet spot and watch them fall!

I might suggest a 2 blade for bears though...but I haven't hunted bears so feel free to ignore that little bit of advice if you so desire.

Yes and yes.  "3 shots in a softball" at 25 yards, well, that is pretty dang good.  It sounds to me like you'll do just fine.

TxAg

You're doing better than me. Way to go!

gto_guy

Sounds like the arrow could be a little on the stiff side but as long as they are flying good then you should be set to hunt.I`m not a fan of serrated heads but they should do the job
62" Checkate Hunter II 43lbs at 28
64" Dry Ridge longbow 58lbs at 28
62" Vermillion River longbow 57lbs at 30
58" Lost Creek Life Ender 50lbs at 28

Night Wing

I prefer light poundage bows which you can see in my signature along with the arrow setups for both bows.

I bowhunt whitetail deer, javelina and small feral hogs.

I have not shot carbon for a while, But with what I remember I agree to the above statement, unless you keep your arrows long.

Your setup is more than adequate. Welcome back to the good side.

They're not really showing stiff...I thought at first they might so that's why I was messing with the 100 gr brasss inserts with 150 gr head and I cut my arrow at 28.5"

3 shots in a softball at 25 yds is world class.
Means you are shooting a near perfect score on a 20 yd 300 round.

Cmalone1

Wow I didn't know it was that great of shooting!! I have always just shot instinctive and never thought anything about it!! It. Always semmed to me there were a ton of guys who shot that well and that was just the average!

Dan Adair

Its amazing what not being overbowed can do for a guy  :D

Now if you can verify that three BH tipped arrows will hit that sofball at 25 yards, you will be golden.
