What does everyone else do to get in shape for hunting the west? I ride my bike some, jog some , and hike with
my pack w weight in it. The duration of Ll of these will increase as we get closer to leavin. My brother likes to run up and down bleachers.

Any other good ideas out there?

I rode my mountain bike a few miles a day for a couple months prior.

In the past, I have done the climbing hills with weight vest, stairs, gym, etc.  This year I am doing a cardio/boxing class and it is the best/hardest workouts I have done since college many years ago.  We do lots of leg / ab work and you get plenty of cardio from runs/exercise machines/ and bag work and sparring for multiple rounds.  I feel like I will hit the mountains stronger than ever this year!

Living the west I keep in shape for the mountains by lots of long hikes and mountain bike rides. For being on the flat the biggest mistake most make when they come to visit is not enough hydration including an electrolyte replacement drink of some kind. You can do interval training such as at a cross fit gym to help build endurance and strength.

Do cardio but really hit the bleachers and hills, walking with weight/backpack !!! You use your leg and foot muscles different when you walk than when you run,jog or bike. Climbing up, going down and walking sideways on hills will help stretch strengthen all the muscles you will be using in a hunt, reducing the chance of injuring yourself. It would really suck to try to pack out even a small elk with a pulled hamstring.

Hey Tim,

Do a quick search for Elk-Fit.  Its currently on page one.  This thread is about getting fit for the upcoming hunting season.

Lots of good info in the thread.
