I'm new to the site and traditional archery as well.  I've shot recurves before but not recently.  I've got a Black Widow PSR II that will arrive Tuesday and I'm curious to know which tip protectors to use.  Leather, rubber, plastic??  I'm sure I'll have lots of questions and I'll be using the search button a bunch but if I can't find it I will be asking!!  Looking forward to contributing to the board as I undergo my newest archery challenge!  Happy Shooting!

I've always used rubber. It's easy and cheap.

Years ago, I had a bow that I was able to bareshaft just fine, but when I put a tip protector on it I was not able to get the same level of forgiveness in that bow. I finally ended up taking the tip protector off the bow and I have never used one since then. Instead, I just rest it on my shoe when I am standing around...or look for a clean spot to set it on when I prop it up against a tree or something. Of course, occasionally it will get a bit of dirt or something on the end, but when I pick it back up I will wipe the dirt off the bottom tip to prevent much from getting into the bowstring...and other than that I don't concern myself with "tip protection." I have never reconsidered this, as I have since come to learn placing any weight in an unbalanced portion (once the bow is completed and tuned) is less than ideal.

I use the rubber ones. I find them to be too long for my bows, so I roll them down a little, like a cuff. They not only protect the tip, they keep the lower loop of the bowstring from falling off when the bow is unstrung.

I'm with ring neck,and I always use them.

Your bow will have a rubber protector when it arrives. First time you feel it stop a bumped bottom tip you'll be glad you used it.


Laced leather ones look cool but also can hold moisture.

Rubber on all my bows .  It is important to remember the moisture is the enemy of limb tips. You want to take the tip protector off if you get moisture in it.  Let it dry out and then put it back on the bow.

I use a rubber limb tip on the bottom limb.  I cut them so they are not as long.  I like the protection when I am sitting in a ground blind.  I don't have to worry about the tip sitting unprotected on our often moist ground while I try not to move.

I really appreciate all the feedback!  I don't intend to drag it but I do hunt out of ground blinds a lot especially in the midwest.  Will look for some rubber tip protectors!  Any pros or cons using plastic??

Despite my earlier comment, I would say that IF one is going to use one, the rubber ones TRIMMED to just barely go over the string loop is probably ideal. Keep it minimal though.

The one that gave me problems was a store bought one made of leather. I have seen some VERY small leather ones that were home made.

I have had bad luck with the shiny black rubber/plastic ones not fitting in the first place, or falling off of the tip when I am not looking.

If the string locks it on, it will be fine. That means either a leather one, which is great in dry climes, or the plastic Saunders one. In wet places, the leather will stay wet for a long time, which is bad for the tip. Even the rubber ones should be removed after hunting in the wet, to allow any water collected to dry out, rather than sitting on the limb tip.

The rubber ones that I use do not get locked onto the tip by the string, but they seem to hold fast and do the job.
