Hey guys. Lately I've been thinking about eventually hunting for black bear - not this year, but sometime in the future.

What I'm wondering is, is my current setup good enough for bear? According to the regs in ontario, its legal - but it seems a little light to me. I just want to get some opinions on it. If you could also post your own setups for bear hunting, that would be helpful too.

My setup (arrow stats generated by Stu's calculator, based on my inputs):

Martin Hunter 50# @28 (my draw is about 27-28)
Easton XX75 2117
Woodsman broadhead, 125 grain
Arrow weight is 11.7 gpp
FOC is 11.9%

So. Any thoughts? Would it do the job?

Yep - use what your would for deer and you will be fine.

Geo S

Yes. I used a woodsman with similar weights and the arrow went through the bear, stuck in the ground beyond it. Bear went about 20 Yds.

Thanks for the input, guys. This is a long-term thing for me - like maybe next year. Right now I don't have a lot of vacation time, and what I do have I want to devote to deer hunting if possible.

I just wanted to get some input on whether I'd have to be looking at an entirely new bow/arrow setup, in which case it would go from being a long term set up to a long, long, long term set up!

David Mitchell

Yes, you're fine with that set up.

As a bear guide/hunter , all you need is a well placed arrow, and you should be able to see your bear fall over. Your set up is fine. Good luck with your hunt !!

Yep...Quebec June 2009, 250# boar with double lung delivered from my 47# longbow, 40 yrd. recovery.  You're good to go!

perfect set up.  remember to let the bear settle down at the bait.... pick a spot.

be aware, bear hunting is addicting....
