I'm needing to build a dozen arrows. Nothing odd there, you may think. The problem is, I haven't had to mess with arrows for a while now. I know the formula for all my bows & I can knock out a dozen in about an hour.
I've just got a hold of a Dan Quillian Bamboo Longhunter. Awesome bow, seems to shoot nicely, but I need some proper spined, well weighted (read; HEAVY) arrows.
Oh, the bow is 82# at my 31" draw. The Beeman MFX 340s that shoot out of all my other bows (62-66#) & weight 700gn are just, simply, too damned light.
Can someone whip me up a recipe for a nice heavy arra for this monster? I don't care what it's made from wood, carbon or aluminium, it's all good with me!

Going by Stu's chart a full length Easton FMJ Dangerous Game 250 with a 75gr insert and 125gr point should get you in the ballpark. Total arrow weight is 792 grains.Hope this helps.

I'm just working up some buff arrows for my trip with Andy and Mic. For 82# Shawnee dakota limbs. The FMJ Dangerous game shafts are looking/working good so far. I do have 6 - grizz safari shafts with 300gr up front cut 31" they are 1300gr total (3x50gr brass weights installed) - one big a$$ arrow - they fly great but I'm heading toward FMJ for my choice.

And yes we do have bass in the frozen north - we just have to ice fish for them! Actually I don't fish for rough fish such as bass/walleye/pike -I'm a died in the wool trout/salmon guy - everything else is for bow fishing far as I'm concerned.

If you want to use wood try the hex shafts. I was able to make up nearly 900gr arrows using their pine shafts.

How do you think 2317s would work out? I can go to 300gn points pretty easily, possibly more than that.
I'm looking to end up with something like an 850-900gn finished arrow.

Wow. I shot them for a ling time and don't think I've really had a bad one.

I think you can rule out wood with those specs Rob.
You would need shafts longer than 33" and 115# spine. Probably not going to happen.

What about the super heavy AD Hammerheads?

I'm really trying to stay at the 'pauper' end of the arrow pricing spectrum, if I can!  :D

premium surewood doug fir, full 32" long, 23/64", 110-115# spine, $36/dozen.  bob @ surewood will have no problem finding these raw shafts weighing in at nearly (or over!) 600 grains each.  load the front end up a LOT, these shafts can take it and are dead straight and baby butt smooth.  for more front end weight, internally foot with an iron nail, 60-100 grains.  slather on 3-4 coats of min-wax polyU to seal and you'll be good to hunt anything less than elephant (but might work on them, too!    :D    ). i can't talk highly enuf of surewood doug fir shafts!  imho, they are the highest standard for all woodies, bar none.

Another choice would be the Arrow Dynamic Super Heavy Traditional Hammerheads.  I had some of the proto types, but don't recall the over all wt.  I can check and get back to you if you are interested.  They are spined heavier and the wt is heavier than the AD Trad Hammerheads.

I have never tried it but I think some one has mentioned using a carbon arrow inside a alum arrow. Sounds like it would work and be on the less expensive side.

robtattoo, I'm just a little heavier then you, but not much..I shoot the CX 350's cut to 31" BOP, with a 100 brass insert, and a 260, and a 290 field point. Total arrow weight is 745-775..

I aso shoot 90-95#  Surewood Doug Fir arrows, cut to 31" , witha 190 field point. Arrow weight of 778..

Gilbert is right on the carb in Alum. I thought of this also. I have put vapor/ Blackhawk carbon in a 2117, but never checked the spine or weight.

Back in the day, Tink Nathan and others were putting wood shafts in alum, for african game.

I have some ole Acme Ramin from the early 90's that spine over 100, 11/32 dia!
