saw someone selling some carbon arrows. The arrows had a 1" 2219 footing on the end. What is this all about? What does it do?

thanks

BearAddict-

The seller put 1" of an aluminium arrow on outside of the carbon arrow at the insert.  This keeps the carbon from splitting if you hit a rock or other unforgiving object.  It also adds about 8-10 grains to the front of the arrow.

Yes that is correct, carbons are pretty tough arrows, there weakest part are the open ends.Point insert end and nock end, footings are put on by guys that plan to do some stump shooting. Some guys will also foot the nock end also but with a shorter piece. It will strengthen the end of the carbon making them very tough and durable arrow.

They work very well for stump shooting, Here is a link of what alum, shafts will fit carbon for footings.
