I carry nothing on a belt. Fanny for home hunting and day packs for extended. I can't even stand stuff in my pockets.

If you hunt with your kids when they are young, you won't be hunting all over for them when they are teenagers.

Hopewell Tom

My outfit resembles Stumpkillers'. I carry a knife on my belt, firestarter, compass and water in my cargo pants pockets. Other dodads in the pack.I want these necessities on my person in case something happens to my small pack.
Kind of sounds paranoid to say that, so OK, I'm paranoid!

WHAT EACH OF US DOES IS OF ULTIMATE IMPORTANCE.

STUMP THUMPER

Instead of packs either back or fanny I use a camo (turkey) vest while hunting or stumping or scouting. You can carry a lot of things and they are out of the way. They have a back pouch for xtra clothing( rain suit) and a lot of pockets.
Works for me while in Colorado elk hunting or home stand hunting.

I too keep most stuff in a a back pack....and so far only have seen 1 other reference to my other option: Cargo Pants! The side leg pockets are at the perfect level for easy access. You can cram  alot of stuff in there without interfering with your hunt, hike, whatever...and nothing gets tangled in your packs straps.

You can find them in any camo pattern under the sun--esp. if you check out the military surplus type catalogs; but I've found some really good ones at Goodwillm for $2's !!

Another point that might be helpfull: If you use a backpack with multiple pockets and your basic stuff is always the same: keep them in the same pockets always, no matter the season! That way if an emergency hits and/or night falls before you're out of it---you won't have to search for your stuff--in a panic situation, it's amazing how you forget where you stashed your first-aid kit or extra batteries " the last time you put them in there".  Keep it simple--keep it consistent! I carry a six inch blade on the waist belt of my pack. Also had lion stalk me like Fortun81, also packing more than a blade.
