Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has any good ways to remove/kill fleas on a freshly killed Javelina before photos and butchering? I don't really relish the idea of being eaten by the same fleas that were just eating the Javelina that I plan to be eating soon.

I know back home here in NY deer are infested with ticks.  What I do a s a taxidermist, is when I get a cape that's loaded,  I slip it in a big plastic back and spray a load of Raid bug killer in the bag...move the cape around a little, then spray some more...let it sit for a half hour...

That vast majority of ticks will be be dead in the bag after that....

I would think Javi's are small enough to do the same with.

I know some guys here use some kind of powder to control the bug problem with javi's in TX.Dust um up with the powder and you're good to go....probably just reg. old dog tick powder.

Soap clogs the breathing apparatus (spiracles) on bugs. They suffocate and drop off. Ivory is fine. They also will leave a dead critter if you just wait.

When we slaughter hogs, we dip them in scalding water, it only takes a minute, and scrape all the hair off with bell-shaped scrapers. Leaves the skin clean and white. Javies aren't near as big as the pigs we process, and you wouldn't need a huge tank like we use.

I don't fancy gettin raid all over something I'm going to eat. I'd throw them in stock tank for 10 mins fleas don't swim or breath good under water.

As the Javelina's body cools, the flea's will leave, Leave it about 15 min. on one side and flip it over on the other, move a couple feet. Unless you put it around your neck or in your truck, not a real issue.

Gloves for the cactus thorns.

We would spray down with perminone on our pants and long sleeves, this kept them off us. We would then gut the javelina to start him cooling and then hang him on the nearest fence post for 15 minutes. Most of the fleas would jump off as he cooled.

We would dust one when we killed it with Sevin powder. It is the stuff you put on rose bushes for bugs. It makes them leave or die in a hurry.

I have tried many ways bug bombs in a large trash bag,seven dust and spraying Raid bug killer on them.Now we just hang them in the shade a little while and most fleas jump off.You will still get one or two that jumps on you while skinning really no big deal.I also have concerns about using bug killing chemicals on meat I intend to process.

Thanks for all the good input guys, I appreciate it. Ya'll should come kill some turkeys and Javelina's. We have a last minute special to fill some turkey hunts right now - half price ($750) for two toms and a Javie or two thrown in.

I've spray'd down Javi's and hogs with Raid on a number of occasions and wait 10 minutes.  No ticks or fleas to worry about.  Hose em down good to wash off the insecticide before you butcher.
