What are the essentials a guy needs to make a flemish twist string? Our local outdoor chain store caters to the wheels and never has the string I need, so I would like to be able to turn one out if I get in a bind. Thanks!

Google, flemish bow string board and you will get all the info you need.

Check how to's here.

You tube the same question.

They are easy to make once you get the hang of it.  I hope this helps.

If you can make it to the TN Classic, the IBO Trad Worlds, the Howard Hill, or the Jerry Pierce let me know and we can meet up and I'll show you.

There's a lot on the www about strings, but a lot of it is inaccurate and/or incomplete.

For instance, it seems a majority of flemish string boards go by bow length rather than string length.  That is hit or miss at best.  How to measure for an accurate finished string will vary depending on the material, strand count, how you twist, etc.

Like anything else you want to do well, accurate information is a "must".

Great offer there from Chad, BK.  If you can not make those shoots, get his "Doing the Twist" DVD.  Not only will you get expert advice on string making, you will get some great plans for a string board and stretcher.

Added a couple of photos of the jig that I made from the Doing the Twist plans.  Red oak with brass pins and spool rod.  I added some rubber feet to the bottom to keep it from moving around.

A board , a couple rolls of string and a roll of serving and a serving tool. The only other things I use are a paper clamp, knife, wax and a match. They are real easy to make and it's great fun. I have taught countless people including kids sitting around a fire and in in an hour they are making there own.
