Reworked and refinished my Mohawk

Hello Gang-

I trimmed down the sides of my grip at the top and bottom and shortened the shelf. In the process I sanded the bow and applied a new finish.

I want you to know that this was my first time that I tried to reshape and refinish a bow, most of the time I would shoot it as it is or sell it. This Mohawk is very special though because it's one of those combination's that I've always wanted, white and black glass with a Myrtle riser.

I have 2 people that I want to thank for helping me through this process, Vince from Mohawk bows and Rob DiStefano. Both of these guys answered either my emails or phone calls. They made the process much easier.

Wow Darren, you've got more guts than I do.  I would just have to send mine to Vince.  Come to think of it I did, had him take down the grip to fit my hand better.  I bought mine used here and contacted Vince, he treated me like I was the original owner.  What a super guy to deal with.  Great job on the reconditioning.

That's what I like, a guy who jumps in and starts file'n and changing things to fit. Good for you, looks like you did a great job

JP-

It was a real learning experience for me, I have building arrows for 20 years but never tackled a bow.

I used 220 grit sand paper to remove the finish and shape the grip. Than I used 320 grit to smooth it out. Vince recommended Deft satin int./ext. poly spray in the can. The Deft looks just like Fullerplast when applied. The Deft is easy to apply, just use thin coats(I did 3). I did have a spot that went on heavy, and it created an orange peal look. I used some 2000 grit sand paper and reapplied some poly in that area.

I won't think twice next time I need to make adjustments to a bow or want to refinish one.

Friend-

Here is a pic before, look at the lower part of the grip and shelf. Look at how the grip had a bulge in the lower part of the grip. My son said the bow went to Jenny Craig and lost some weight.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

The grip feels much better, I found that the bottom of the grip was too wide and too high that I could feel the bottom of the grip in my palm.

I really enjoyed reworking the grip because it was a process to make it fit me. I took a little wood off, then I shot it, took some more wood off, then shot it again until the grip felt right  right.

Even though Vince at Mohawk offered to redo the grip, I told him that it would be better if I did it because I'm the only one who knows how the bow feels in my hands. I was concerened about finishing it but Deft poly is easy to use and looks like fullerplast.

Nice work Darren, I have also had many bows in the past I just sold for grip issues. I have always been too skeered to do it though. I have one right now that I absolutely love but it needs a file and some sandpaper. Great job and your inspiration may get me in trouble Haha.
