Below is a poem that I wrote recently that all traditonal bowhunters will enjoy.

Another Hunter

By Nathan Antone Meek

Alone I thought I'd be

Alone from my fellow man

Alone with only fellow creatures

Alone on a windswept ridge

Alone amongst the sage and pine

Alone with the rattlesnake and red-tailed hawk

Alone on a western plain

Alone with my bow and a quiver of arrows

Alone as I stalk the deer

Alone was she, the deer

Alone we thought we'd be

Alone in her bed under a tree

Alone I am after she smells me

Alone I thought I'd  but a matter of few feet lays a stone arrowhead

I'm not alone and not the first who tracks the deer

Very good Nathan!   Been a long winter round here, ain't it?   Good time to sharpen that pencil and write some poems.  Do us some more!

PS: There aren't many more magical moments than when you find a stone point and while picking it up your mind reels at the thought of the last human hand that was holding it.

We are not the first to come this way, hopfully we will not be the last!

Great Poem NateDog!.........♠
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. TGMM ♥

Here is another poem that I wrote..

Once a Bison

He lay in the earth
Under years of dirt and rock
Seasons of cold and hot
In a tomb lost from sight
A tomb of sands and clays

Once a king of great power
Now he lays covered
In a crypt of timeless age
Now after thousands of seasons
The ancient tomb is broken
Just a horn peaks through the sand

Here is another that I wrote a while back that I dug up in one of my hunting journals..

What Drives Us?

Why we hunt?
Just to hear things, that others don't
The roar of an elk as he bugles in the canyon
The cry of a coyote on a wintery night
The bay of hounds on the track
The whisper of the leaves
The moan of a moose sick in love

Why we hunt?
Just to see things, that others don't
The doe deer as she scratches her ear
The smile of a fellow hunter with their first deer
The cedar arrow as she arcs in flight
The sunrise as it comes over the mountain
The grouse as it struts across the trail

Why we hunt?
Just to feel things, that others don't
The sweetness of a bow in your hand
The crisp air on your skin waiting for the deer
The warm feeling of success after years of waiting
The brief sadness after we take another creature's life
The happiness of just a day in the field

Why we hunt?
A good question, only a hunter can answer

Thanks for the feedback, I enjoy writing poems about the natural world and hunting.

Here I sit all broken-hearted...
Watching as the deer departed...
My shot was well above his back...
Now all that is left, is his track...
And I am back where I started...
HUNGRY!
