A walk in the woods

I wanted to get into the woods today.

I told Tony Van Dort that I would send a "prayarrow" off for him. I truly enjoyed doing it.

I had written what Tony had instructed on it(NOGR8TRLV) and his name. I watched it disappear up and over the tree tops into the woods at 3 Creeks State Forest.

Then I continued on for a bout of stump shooting.

I ran onto a rub that has me scratching my head. I don't ever remember seeing a rub that appears this fresh this late into the year.(or early in the year)

Anyone have any thoughts on the rub?

Pictures didn't pop up for me.However I find rubs made way after the rut is over.I also did a little stumpin today.Was a great day to be out.

My son and I found a fresh looking rub on Saturday, but we're pretty sure it was made during the late fall. It did look fresh though. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

Cedar can look amazingly fresh in the spring. shavings in the leaves look big enough not to blow around.

I would say the rub was made shortly after the Just my opinion based on the shavings on top and the color of the rub.

I find if i'm not sure how fresh a rub is I get the back of my knife and rub a bit of bark off the tree and then have a look and compare the two, this will give you an indication of how fresh.
You can return the next day, afternoon or next week and have a look again and compare the rub you made with the rub you are interested in.

I have seen rubs on cedar's look fresh for a long time after the season as well. Just keep an eye on it for next season. Great pics!

Mudd,
I think there is a chance the rub may have been recent. Here's why. Over the years I've found a few recent sheds at the base of a small tree or bush that had been recently 'rubbed'. I've also seen bucks during late January and early February walking with one or both antlers obviously loose. I suspect it's a bit uncomfortable for the antlers to be rattling around and the bucks may try 'rubbing' them on trees to get them off. Don't know this to be fact, but the circumstantial evidence supports the idea.
