ok, I've made arrows several different ways. tape, glue, 3 fletch, 4 fletch, RW, LW, chopped, burned, natural turkey and store bought. In all cases one or more of a batch will whistle when shot, others from the same batch do not. WHY? What am I missing/doing wrong?

Must be those musical nocks.....

Maybe they're HAPPY arrows, by the way which tune are they whistlin?

Honestly, you probably have sub-par feathers(quill to stiff) or they are cut too high? Banana fletch and high back shields tend to make noise when flying.........

any other suggestions, guys???  :confused:

I love whistlers!    

My experience has been that a whistler occurs when a section (1/4-1/2") of the fletching on one of the feathers has been cut out or damaged.  It does not always happen,,, but the ones I have seen were like that.  

By the way, to make a great whistler, install a ping pong ball near the point end after cutting four small triangular slits around the circumferance.  Incoming!!!    :D  

I have seen field points designed for whistling...way cool too!   :cool:

Brent,when that happens to me it's because the feather had a miss match somewhere.Sometimes in the feather when it's cut or when it's glued on sometimes it slips alitle in the reciever even the clamps while pretty good can be off we're only human after all LOL

There is another thing that cause's arrows to whistle LOL opperator error,What I mean is that when I'm practiceing alone in the shop and it's quiet I can hear the differance between a clean  release and a goof.When the shot goes off well not only is the bow quiter so is the arrow.I'm sure that's more pronounced if spine is close but I'm kinda guessin on that one

Add a drop of glue on both the front and back ends where the feather meets the shaft.

Madness, I already do that. Doesn't make any sense. 3 out of a new batch of 6 sound like they have snuffers on them. The other 3 are silent. Same jig, same batch of feathers, same chopper. it's frustrating me.

The "whistlers" are the "macho" arrows.

Save the whistlers for the bunnies?

It doesn't take much of an imperfection in the feather to make them whistle. I have had store-bought arrows whistle and I have had some start whistling after shooting them a while and maybe clipping the fletching with another arrow. I think is sounds kind of cool when shooting targets anyway!

As a side note, I don't think the whistle makes much difference. Deer will sometimes freeze and try to figure out where the whistle is coming from. By the time they figure it out, it is too late. Maybe it's because the arrow is moving that they don't react like jumping the string.

I,ve had them be off even using a burner I'd bet the chopper has a better chance of pulling a strand of feather out of place as it's being cut.

I assume your marking your arrows so ya know it's the same ones each time???
