Arrow spine

Ok guys im geting a few sets of broadheads in diffirent weights from a friend in the states. My longbow draws 41pounds at my draw of 28in. On the 3 rivers spine chart they suggest a 500 spine arrow for a 175 point. Wont that be to heavy of a spine? The bow is a pse legacy

It would be for me, depending on arrow length.

Most of my bows are in the 42 - 46 # range. My 500 spine arrows are cut to 29.5 - 30" and I usually have a 200 gr point on them.

I think, if you start with a full length arrow, you might be able to use 175. Try it with field points first. Your broadhead weight will be very close to your field point weight and field points are dirt cheap compared to broadheads.

It is nearly impossible to tell you for sure over the internet, but I would bet $$$ that you will be better suited with a .600 spine arrow!

Thanks guys. I have some old .500 spine arrows in 500 spine will try them first. But i also think the 600 spine will be better. Will put in some weight tubes aswell to get my arrow to 500 or so gr. Total weight. Thinking of easton ion arrows or maybe easton legacy for a more traditional look

There are a lot of factors involved.A 500 spine carbon is a .500 spine a 28" length but the dynamic spine at 30" with a 175 gr. point weight will be less the a .500 spine.Ideally a .600 spine with say a 125 gr. point might be correct spine wise but the total arrow weight will most like be under 400 grs.The .500 spine arrow with 175 gr. upfront my act more like a .600 spine arrow.Carbon arrows can be very adaptable depending on length and front end weight.Type of string you have can make a difference on spine of the arrow.A modern low stretch string will need a stiffer spine the a bow with a dacron string.But that will be determined from shooting and tuning.

I agree with Bisch. I'm shooting .600 Easton Axis with 200 grains up front and 28" draw 42-45#.

Ok thanks allot cant find a test kit in south africa but will buy 3 500 and 3 .600 spines and test them

The only 600 spine arrows i can find in south africa is easton ions. Thinking of moving to alloy arrows or maybe tonkin bamboo

Also no brass inserts are available for arrows.

If you get 600 spine you won't need brass inserts.

Definetly needs a big gim. My only option is to take the .600 spine easton ions with normal inserts and weight tubes. To get my arrow weight past 400gr

I have 2 bows that are 41# both perform well with the 1535 175-200 tip. 600. You could also try Doug fir.... Just a thought. No weight tubes needed.

Built a lot of arrows for folks over the years. Someone would have to prove to me before my very eyes that a 500 spine arrow with a 175 grain point would fly better than 600 spine shaft with the same point.

600 all the way. It is possible to deceive ones eyes. It happens all the time. I guess though when the results end up somewhat favorable, it is hard to argue.
A big and common mistake is the thought that adding or subtracting weight to the front of an arrow is all that it takes to go from one spine to another. While is certainly will weaken or stiffen the reaction of an arrow, it is not nearly as significant as going from one spine to another or as profound as cutting chunks of shaft.
Something you will rarely hear someone tell you when explaining bare shafting...(assuming Rh shooter) an shaft with nock kicking to the left upon release can be both too weak and too stiff... yep, I said it too stiff. A shaft with no feathers bounces off of the riser has no way to correct itself to give a kick right (stiff) showing. One must always be aware of possible false readings while tuning.

While I'm not in South Africa, I'll happily send stuff to you and with very little persuading be more than happy to bring it to ya.
I've been there a couple of times and once to Namibia. Tie up a big fat bush pig for me and I'll be right over with all kinds of goodies

BigJim is not afraid of big airplanes with very small seats and 16 hour flights but you better have plenty of biltong on hand...I'm kind of partial to the spicy giraffe. I can eat my weight in it.

thanks .600 spine it is guys. i can get my hands on some GT traditional shafts in 1535. if im correct thats he same as .600. so will give it a try. also wen on 3 rivers archerys website and punched in he data of my bow and arrow i want to use. and all pointed to .600 spines.
