I like really nice woods also, but I love the old school camo they used to put under the glass. Just seemed so classic for a hunting bow.
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

You're right Ron, and lucky me, I have one with camo limbs. This one will be my 10th last bow so its got to be special.   :biglaugh:    :deadhorse:

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Hey Izzy,

With the charcoal dymondwood riser I would have to agree, it would be hard to beat gray stained quilted maple...  I love that stuff!  Stained knarley tamo ash would look good too...

Spalted mango or spalted curly mango

Izzy

The more I look at quilted maple the more Im digging it, gray or light brown stained. A bright yellow accent stripe in amarillo wood with limb wedges to match are coming into focus for my final order. Beth has been in contact with me already on bow details and Im starting to see that their customer service is on par with their quality product.

Izzy,

I once saw Big Jim working on a Bow that had Redwood Burl.  It was amazing.

He has a huge wood collection, you may send him a message to see if he has anything in stock you may like?

Sorry to keep chiming in but being "involved" in the process brings back the excitement of having a bow built.
Relax,

No apology needed Charlie. I appreciate your input. I think I've got my final decision made.

GRAYBEARD

I'm thinking exhibition grade koa would be hard to pass on. Those grains look so deep you think you could reach in and pull out gold! With a Santos rosewood riser, oh my!!

One last consideration. Have you thought about Angelstep maple? Beth suggested it to me, and it looks great against a dark riser.
Let me know if you want a picture.
When it comes to Schafers, you know I wouldn't steer you wrong.

Izzy,
I like Ken's suggestion, but I would suggest Camphor Burl because of the red that is in it. Just type "Camphor Burl Wood" into your search engine and it will show you many images of this wood. Good luck in your quest and keep us posted please.

I would like a picture of what you have Ken. Ive seen some and it looks like a variation of quilted maple. Pretty close to being sold on that. Thanks Bud.

Izzy,
My order took 12 months, looked at Tip site every night, made up my mind on woods until I changed it again, over and over, you will drive yourself crazy... needless to say no matter what you get it will be stunning and you will second guess yourself anyway...

Izzy

Your right Frank! Beth told me I have 8 months to bother her with changes. Now I have to decide if I want amarillo wedges to match accent stripe. Man I deserve sympathy for having such an obsession.

Keith Zimmerman

Its definitely an addiction.  Good luck.

I just went through the same thing building a Blacktail. So many choices!!

My should be here around Christmas!

Bowwild

I have same recent experience as Allen with Blacktail.

I love a heavy (mass) weight bow. Macassar and Australian Corrugata. Striped myrtle in the limb veneers.

One of the prettiest bows (pics only) I've ever seen was a beautiful walnut riser with striped myrtle and walnut veneered limbs. Again, it was a Blacktail.

The folks at Schafer are very generous with pictures of various combinations. I think their checkered grip makes for a very comfortable place to set the bow hand.

Yes they did, thats some really good looking wood but more and more Im leaning toward a consistent patterned quilted maple. Love that stuff. Thats real nice Ken, I want something like that but with more of a "blister" pattern but thats close.

I would NOT recommend Camphor Burl for riser wood, or veneers either for that matter. Very unstable wood & it stinks real bad....
