Had two nice does come in tonight while I was on the ground had one at about 25 paces she jumped the string on me. No harm no foul.

You are a deer slaying machine Jim, if I was a deer that lived near you I'd be very afraid.

Got out Saturday and had a doe and yearling pass by at about 35 yards on my morning sit. For the evening I went to may stand that is close to a bedding area that is dropping white oak acorns like crazy. Around 5:00pm saw a deer emerge from the laurels and start feeding heading my way. Couldn't tell it was a nice buck until he fed closer. Sure enough he was a nice 8pt with two drop tine kickers and passed by me at 20 yards. Then he circled around a bit and probably caught a whiff since he looked up and spotted me in my stand. He backed off and went the other way. On Long Island bucks aren't legal until the 15th this year.

I haven't ben out much. Having lots of 1.5 year old 4'sand 6's play around me. Does haven't offered me a shot. I'm glad I havent seen any shooter bucks. That hurts.

Izzy

Ive been getting used and abused with no time to hunt. Wednesday will change that and then a whole week straight of hunting coming up fast.

Congrats to those who have made meat. Those pesky deer are out there for sure.

Have not been able to get into the woods yet. Was sick on opening day and then working every day since , except for one day visiting family. Self-employed so have to take the work when it's offered. I keep trying to schedule clients for early in the morning or late in the afternoon but can't always be that lucky. I'm holding out for a couple of hours tomorrow afternoon.

ronp, hope you made it out over the Columbus weekend.

Congratulations Jim.

Bad news- I haven't seen a buck. Good news- I can't shoot him until after the 15th.

Kat i think it is a good thing that you haven't seen a buck.  Sure would suck to watch a nic big 10 pointer walk by and not be able to fling an arrow at him!!  I haven't seen a deer since opening weekend.  This weekend with the cold temp should be good.

I was able to get out for a couple hours yesterday.  Spent too much time already working on my house.

I had a doe and her fawn come in, about 35 yards away.  They were feeding on beech nuts as they disappeared into thick underbrush.  It was good to get back in the woods, if just for a few hours.

Good Grief Jim, You are on a roll. Congrats.

Good luck this week Izzy.

I plan on being out Saturday.  Its nice to know I will not have to pass what may be the only shot opportunity I may get this year if a spike walks in.

If the forecast is correct and we get rain Saturday, I may just hang a stand instead.  Sunday will find me hunting. I have to go to a  wedding Saturday night and will be tired Sunday but I will be where I want to be in the morning.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

Yesterday I got a lot of heavy things out of the way including a gritty court case that was wearing on me and the fact that Ive only been out for two short sits had me feeling good. As I was preparing my gear for todays hunt I felt true excitement, like a kid the eve before opening day.

Just a 1/4 mile from home I saw a coyote cross the road and I wondered if it would be an omen of good things to come. Saw some deer on the way and anticipation was building. As soon as I got to the farm, a very big doe crossed the road toward the bottom of the property and on the walk  in to my stand I saw two more deer in my flashlight beam that I got pretty close to before I saw them. I reversed course and took an alternate route and every few steps I look back at the deer and they didn't spook.

Getting to my stand well before light I got situated and before long I could hear deer behind me eating acorns and beech. It was still too dark to see with most of the trees still leafed out. As it started getting light, I started turning slowly and while my head was pivoting I caught a flicker of white coming toward me from the hemlocks toward the other deer.

I started walking from my front to back on my left side and was looking right in the area I heard the others feeding. It looked to be calm and my wind was right so I started looking for an opening. I found a tiny one and at 30 yards decided to shoot while it was walking undisturbed. Unfortunately It stopped at about the time I released and my lead was too much. Next thing I knew the deer cartwheeled and was lying still on the ground.

I thought I hit it in the head but got out of the tree to see what happened. My arrow hit it at the base of the neck, right where it joins the torso. Another arrow to the heart and it was dead, quickly.

Number 2 for the Silver Tip. Its no giant buck but Im thrilled with it as I am with any deer I kill. I still have unlimited antlerless tags and a trip to big buck country coming up soon. Im looking forward to the rest of the season.
