educate me on woodies

Thinking bout getting a dozen wood arrows from 3rivers once my aluminums are all lost. Thinking bout loading the front up with 190 gr points shooting from a bear kodiak magnum and bear montana both 45 lbs at 28. My draw is roughly 28. What spine do you guys recommend and what do I need to know about shooting wood arrows

I suggest you order spine for a bow about 20 # heavier than yours and then, to save yourself grief (everybody knows you can't shoot woodies straight), send them to me for proper disposal.

I'd try around 55#, seems to work for me with a similar set up, your mileage may vary however.  The KMag and the Montana may need different arrows.

Going to 190 gr points will up your spine needs about 10 lb over 125 gr points.  This is not a bad thing, I shoot mostly 200 gr points and like the heavy heads a lot.  The only disadvantage to the heavy points is that they can make your total arrow weight kinda heavy.

For a 45 lb bow cut to center and 29" BOP arrows for your 28" draw, I would start with a 70-74 lb spine.

If it helps, I will share my specs.

Blacktail recurve 53# @28". Using a 63-64# Sitka Spruce 28.75" long.

TallTines recurve  55# @28".  Using a  70/75# Wilderness Custom Surewood,  29" long.

I am currently using a 160 grain two blade broad head.

Both seem to fly good.  I have shot up to 75/80 with 190 heads, but like the flight of the 70/75  with 160 a little better.

Snag at Wilderness Custom arrows is a really good guy and has been very helpful to me in the past.  You might want to give him a call and run your specs past him and see what he thinks.

Final thought.  In my case, the struggle has been with my inconsistent release at times. When it is working right, I can shoot a pretty wide range of spine/arrows through my Blacktail.

Someone, I think Terry - said "form trumps all". I have found that to be a really true statement.

I have a 45# KMag and Grizzly so I'm in a similar position (sort of). I can use the same arrows for both but I have found I need to drop point weight a bit when shooting the KMag. Not a big deal when using aluminum arrows, with woodies not so easy. Like the other poster stated you may need 2 different arrows. I'm kind of interested in playing with a wood arrow too but I haven't so far as I may need different ones for each bow as well. That and I'm still pretty flush in aluminum arrows

I have a 64 Grizzly and 68 K MAG. Both are 50@28 but im only gettin around 48# with my 27ish draw. Im shooting tapered POC 55/60 spine 29" BOP with 125gr tip and they shoot great. If you want to shoot a 190gr you will have to go heavier spine arrow but the heavier weight in arrows you go the slower your bow will shoot and the faster the arrow will drop at farther distances.

Now...get some get some 60/65 tapered POC cut to 30" BOP with the 190's and if they dont shoot good send them to me cause thats what i shoot off my 52-55# ASL's. Good luck on your woodie quest!

I would first be sure of your draw length. It will really help you dial things in. All too often I meet people including myself who THINK their draw is 28" ish. And it's not.  From there you'll get all the right advice on this site. Good luck. I'm on the same path!

Dave, instead of dropping point weight, you might be able to build the strike plate out a bit.  I've been able to tune four bows to shoot the same set of arrows.  Close match in spine and weight helps a lot.  Call the guys at RMSG and they will match a set just to your spec's.

Hi Kristian. You are kind of on the fence as far as spine weight. I'd go with 65/70's for the Montana. The Magnum is going to require a stiffer arrow. Hope this is helpful. A few "testers" from 3Rivers is not a bad idea.

so im thinking bout going with 160 gr points, seem broadheads for 23/64 shafts are harder to find

definitely get yourself a set of test arrows.  you'll save yourself a headache and money.
