Hello and a ?

I just wanted to say hello and ask a question at the same time. After a long stint of hunting with wheeled bows I had my dad's old  super grizzly restrung and it has made shooting like new again like a kid learning all over. So this is all a relearning for me. I am committed to hunting with this bow this year and as a hunter noise is something I am probably over thinking about but I noticed that when I shoot 3 under (which is my preferred method of shooting) it seems louder than when I shoot split finger. Is this real or something I am imagining?

Not uncommon.  Moving your nock point up might help.

Its real. If someone really likes 3 Under I'd always say to get a bow thats tillered for it for less noise. Can you quiet that super grizzly? Sure. There's a whole list of things to slap on the bow, raise the brace, heavier arrows, etc, and those things will help with split too. I'm biased, but I say if you're starting out and you can do split well, do it. Some guys started 3 under and after many years they just feel weird going split, and vice-versa. But thats just my opinion and there will be a legion of 3 under folks who have zero issues it that should be along shortly.

Shooting three under on a bow tillered for split can be a little noisier. A couple things, do you have string silencers and how heavy are your arrows? Heavy arrows help a ton to silence a bow, I prefer 10gpp or more! Also proper brace height on a recurve is hugely important in noise reduction. You have  a great bow.  There most definitely can be a  noise issue.  For us to help you, please identify the noise more..  Is it when you release or when the string hits  the bow?

I had a  friend get a  lot of noise as soon as the string left his fingers, a softer glove helped with that.

On the bow, there are a number of products that can help. Good ole Yarn will cure a lot, I prefer wool. put silencers on the string and you can wrap the ends of the string where it contacts the limbs.

Bow Hush is a sponsor here and they sell a premium product for not much money, its for a good cause as well. The nice thing about them is You will not have 500 yards of yarn to figure out what to do with afterward.

Would suggest shooting the method of which you are most comfortable and confident. You have formerly stated that you a starting anew. Ascertaining what actually is personally the best method will come with continued consistent proper practice and knowledge acquisition. Must also, strive to keep in mind that initial changes have the propensity to be naturally awkward.

As you gain more and more experience and knowledge, you will start to hone in on what is best for you and also how to reduce noise levels. Confidence is paramount.

On a side note: Years gone by, I shared some of your same concerns regarding the increased noise levels perceived by utilizing a three-under string hold. Personal experience and confidence have me most stationarily commiited to remain utilizing a three-under string hold for all of my hunting applications.

Another thing that I have found to make a difference is the weight distribution on your fingers. Try putting very little pressure on your ring finger. Should be about 50% middle, 40%index, and only 10% ring finger.

Thank you for all of the quick responses and info. On the bow I have  mole skin on the limbs, 2 sets of silencers unevenly spaced on the string, I have ordered the recurve special from Bow Hush and will install that when it comes in. My bow is #50 @28 with a draw length of 27.5". My arrows are 496 grains so right at the 10 gr mark. One thing I have noticed is on my tab is I am wearing an area on my ring finger area more than others so I will try working on less pressure on that finger today.

Lot of times if your getting wear like that on a tab, you might be not keeping your wrist flat and are torquing the string in the process

I don't have a "Super" Grizzly... But, I have 4 Grizzlys, that are pretty super!!!

I shoot 3under, and have for years... Yarn balls or whiskers 13"-14" from the end loops on your string, set your brace height at 8" and your nock point 5/8" above level.

Just a thought....you might also try trimming your tab back a little if you haven't already. I've had new tabs that were loud upon release until I trimmed back the excess. I have short fingers and that's just been my experience. I shoot split fingers with as little pressure as possible on my ring finger so your mileage my vary, so to speak.

Definately on the right track with the Bow Hush. It's good stuff.
