Boiling/simmer with some dish soap will help cut through all the grim. It will take several sessions before you can get it all clean up. After all that I use the 40% peroxide and powdered bleach that you can buy at Sally's. Make a 50/50 paste and smear all over the skull with a brush. Make sure you have safety glasses on . Its heat that activates the peroxide and bleach. I have been trying several different ways of applying heat. This past season I did 4 skulls. I used the paste and then wrapped in foil and placed under an heat lamp. It worked pretty good. Some people like to apply a clear sealer over it when its done. But if take the time to buff the skull with a rag it will bring out a nice luster to it.

When the lady at the beauty store asked me what I wanted to use it for I said I want to clean up some skulls. My wife who was in the next isle over yelled out "Deer Skulls". It was a fun moment.

Good Luck

In my state(Missouri)you would need to contact the Conservation Dept.in order to keep the skull.I don't mean to be a "wet blanket" but here they get real serious about possible poaching!Just trying to keep you from getting in trouble. Bill.

Thanks for the heads up Bill, I'm glad I don't live in your state.. I wouldn't be surprised if our DNR decided to require a permit to collect deer skulls to generate more money.  It's 100% politics.

I would SKIP the Bleach,NO good !! Go to Super Market and pick up 3lb. box of ARM & HAMMER Super Washing Soda.Works slicker than anything I have ever used.Bring water to just a ROLLING BOIL the A&H works superb !!! Fleshy matter etc. will fall off the skull.
Once cleaned up the peroxide 40 gel (mentioned 0 in earlier post works good paint it on and set it in sun for a few hours hose it off. Voila !!

Go to goodwill and pick a pot up for a few dollars.

a metal 5 gal bucket works great. use tin snips to cut sides down so it flares out to protect antlers from flames. and simmer like a soup bone, no boiling. add a box of baking soda if you need to add anything.

High pressure power washer works awesome, comes out perfect.

Hi

I go with Ron abowe, have had remarkable results with high pressure power washwers - just attache the skull to something, so it will not be blown away with pressure - I have used chicken wire with smaller skulls with sucsess - u can shoot thorugh the wire to the spots that needs to be cleaned.

After boiling I just wrap the skull in gauze and keep it moist with peroxide for 3 days it comes out snow white.
