Bamboo arrow

I am wanting make some bamboo arrows and was wondering , can you cut self knocks in them or do I need to insert a piece of hardwood ?

I insert about 2" of a bamboo skewer stick in each end of the bamboo shaft and use titebond III for glue.


The skewer sticks are $1.00 for a large bag of them at dollar Tree.

Now you can taper the ends with a taper tool for nocks and  points or you can self nock them.

Love cane arrows!

But I never understood buying skewers?  When you trim or cut to length your shaft, I just take the cut piece
split into smaller pieces and shove in and glue! Superglue for me.

I used to insert skewers in the end of cane arrows but don't now. With a wrap(I use sinew)below the nock like Drew suggested they are stronger than most other nocks. I've never had a self nock in a cane arrow or a hardwood shoot break and I've been using them for many years.

That's a great idea. I just glued my points to what was left aftr using a taper tool, but I think I will go with the skewers for now on!

Frank, you don't understand buying skewers?? You get 100 for a buck, use 6 for a half dozen arrows and the rest for the venison Kabobs.

With a sander type taper tool you still don't need to add the skewers. I've done that too.

Actually Jon, I also have used just fallen limbs from the yard. They work great, too, and freee!

The last deer I shot, had a hard maple plug and foreshaft.
