Wow, Bud, those arrows look great. I have never tried the Sharpie for cresting but I definitely will.  I use Testors model paint and have to mess with cleaning brushes, and don't always get as clean a line as I want (operator error I guess).  I like the neat clean lines you got there.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Bud,

Do you crest onto the raw wooden shaft or wait until they are sealed? If so, how many coats of poly do you seal the shafts with before putting the cresting on?

I've tried this but got too much bleeding to get neat lines like that. Wasn't sure how well the Sharpie would hold up on a layer of poly.

Worked good for me except for that one green washable one that found it's way in!! :)

I dip twice in oil based poly, crest, then cover Sharpie with a clear coat of gloss water based acrylic, then one last dunk in poly. As long as I get a good coat of clear over the Sharpie before the final dunk the lines stay crisp. I have rushed and not gotten a good coat of clear and had smears with the final dip.

Allow adequate dry time for the Sharpies before clearcoating and final dip.

Bud they look really great. But how did you manage to keep the lines so straight?

Bud nice cresting!  When cresting over shafts that are darker do you do a base coat of white first when doing light colors like yellow?  I really like this as I struggle with paints.  Thanks, john

That's pretty neat. Never thought of that. Thanks for sharing. God bless.

Bohning Jr Crestor, Tony. An oldie  ;)

No white base rifleman. These colors are straight on the clear poly which is over a natural poplar shaft.

I have'em hanging now with a poly overcoat dip to protect the cresting against smudging when shot across the shelf.

I use sharpies, but they  don't come out quite as nice as yours! Might have to do with the homemade crester I use.

Do you use a base coat of some sorts? Those colors are so crisp. Especially like how the yellow looks.

Another compliment here for you, Bud.
I crest with sharpies too, can't post pics, and they're no work of art. Just done completely freehand, on my  spine/spin tester(hand rolled). No guides - nuthin' much- but satisfying for me, anyway.
Just simple, and still personal expression.

A coat or two of sealant (tung oil, in my case), and another coat or two over the crest.

Works for me.

Red's a booger color. It likes to release when clear coating with the acrylic, so care is needed to keep the lines good with no bleed over.

Although the red I used this time was actually a Bic. Might need to stick to just Sharpie brand only.

Nowhere near as pretty as Buds, but these simple-plane arrows were made with materials available at my local hardware store....including Sharpie pens.
