One of the biggest advantages to hunting on the ground is I tend to hunt a lot more. Not having all the extra gear its a lot easier to just grab the bow and go.

Another plus is I find is you tend to hunt the areas that others do not.

I just hunt with my Asbell plaid pullover ,find a downed tree near a well used trail and if the tree has any sort of root ball left I hide on the tree side or hide inside the root ball and keep still as I can while sitting in my Huntmore 360..A few years ago I took this little 7 point while sitting inside a pretty big rootball and got a 12 yard shot...I use nature to my advantage as much as possible ..I have hunted that root ball many times in the past few years and on another farm this past year had about 6 encounters with several deer and a nice buck within 10 yards using a downed tree and hugging close to the rootball on the tree side..Deer are used to down trees and it's all Natural...I also wer a mask to cover my ugly face and spray with an earthscent every so often to try and mask any odors and play the wind...I have been blessed to have many trees scattered that can be quickly used in case of a wind change...

I've used a 70" bow while on my knees in a stand you just need to cant the bow like when your in a blind,,, ghillies just sew netting over the breast area where the loose material is.   my favorite is a leafy suit and I just sit or kneel down right at the base of fat tree with some ground growth around it,,, prefer to have other trees directly in front of me a few feet away (like turkey hunting with a bow) so I can draw my bow and shoot by the left or right side when its time but I have taken a few deer where I was just sitting right there in the open,,,,, you need to wait till they look somewhere else or hear something,, push pull method of drawing it was works the best.    when my buddy was learning to ground hunt because of his bad back he listened to my instructions wrong instead of setting up the wind and sitting off to the side of a run he  used a 5-gallon bucket painted camo and sat right on the run!!!   he had a doe walk right up to him and they stared at each other at about 10' away.....   the leafy suit is the best I found for ground hunting.   but I killed one buck standing there with my work clothes on,,, its no movement and drawing the bow at the correct time,,, you cannot move at all for hours or very very slow motion.

Its all good, and the options are endless!  My climber is extremely comfortable and i spent many hours in it last year with deer oblivious to my presence.  From the ground, while i have used my blind many times, i do like to use natural materials gathered up from the ground, brush etc.  How do we ever make it between seasons?!??!  I need to get out there!

Personally, I think the spot you want to hunt should tell you how it should be hunted.

Ground only - better shot angle, safer, no worries about anybody stealing my stand. My blinds have a five gallon bucket - who would want that?
But being "eye-to-eye" makes a lot of sense. If you can't watch their eyes how do you know when to move? That 320 degree vision is hard to beat. It's easier when you are at the same level. True, if you see them they see you, but if you're not sillouetted they look right through you anyway. Sorry, I do not believe deer can sense when you are staring at them. Some people do, and avoid looking them in the eye. If you're that close and they haven't taken off yet, movement is all you have to worry about. Same with scent - if the wind holds you're fine. Noise is a no brainer -no squeaking deer stands to worry about.
Also since I use a vintage bow from 1969 I might as well hunt like they did in 1969!

I'm using a leafy suite with a ghillie hat this year. I'm going to carry a folding saw and pruners to make ground blinds on the go. Let's hope it works, I'm low on meat....

I'm completely comfortable in tree's. And, prefer to hunt that way. When I find a good area the first thing I look for is the "right" tree. Sitting on the ground is seldom an option.

used to hunt from trees for many years and after my fall...well its a matter of time if you hunt from tree. (some more lucky, some not so)

Now , i hunt from ground for a natural material blind and i would say, have the same success as in tree...............

Well I am having back problems now and thinking about just hunting from the ground. Not had much experience with this yet , but you have to start somewhere ! I think it takes a more skilled hunter to kill from the ground. I think it's more like one in one on the ground.

My days in the trees are numbered, but aren't over yet.  Whoever said hunting the wind was all you need to do has never been to the N.C. Blue Ridge...the breezes and thermals eddy and swirl constantly.  If you took that advice you'd do nothing but move all day long.  Maybe things are more predictable in your neck of the woods!
