Remembering a new bow

I lay in bed this morning thinking about a time, 5 decades ago when I woke up to a bow under the Xmass tree.( I had been shooting an old hickory long bow I bought for 75 cents.) This new bow ( brand new from some store) had the "recurved" limb tips and was a "hunting" type bow!!!!  I just about turned inside out I was so excited. My parents had no clue as to what they had given me, either right there and then or for the future. I later realized that the numbers on the bow meant that it only had a 25 pound pull and I wasn't going to shoot any deer with it. That was OK though, I shot that bow until I literally wore it out ( the top limb broke off ) and I went on from there to other bows. ( I still have and shoot the K mag I bought new when I was in jr high.)

 

Here's hoping that a few kids out there will feel the same way about a new bow for christmas this year!

Neat story.... I doubt there are any new bows under my tree but I hope there are many happy campers out there this year

Cool story - and similar to mine.  I opened a brand new blue stripe 1974 Kmag for Christmas in 1974 when I was 14 years old.  Almost 40 years later I have been through a lot of bows (even some with wheels) but I still have the 74 Kmag.  I need to thank my Mom for that again tomorrow!

My first bow had suction cups.
I thought about keeping my son's first bow, a mad dog pup recurve.  He and I talked about it and decided to pass the bow on to a friends kid.  I will probalbly keep his current bow, a St. Joe River longbow, when he outgrows it.  My daugter asked for a purple longbow so this spring I will get her a St. Joe River.
Lucky for me the three of us shoot lefty so bow can be shared.  My daughter is the only true lefty though.

I keep my first "real bow" for sentimental value.  It is an inexpensive Ragim Impala but was a gift from my father.
