Got up about 730 this morning and decided to go chase an old nemesis. I had ran into this group several times between a stand of hardwoods next to the neighbors property and an old cabin near the old quarry behind mom and dads place. The members of this group never failed to bust me on my stand sits. I never had luck fooling them, camo, playing the wind nothing ever seemed to hide me in a tree. So when I woke up this morning with a heavy fog and lite drizzle falling off and on I put on my favorite plaid flannel an decided to still hunt.
I stalked my way silently through the woods and as I rounded the bend of the road bed there he was.... "Ol silver belly" was crossing the road bed right in front of me.  I had to squat/lean down to get a shot under a branch in front of me before this bruiser walked out of my life forever. My heart raced! "Focus" I kept telling myself!.... Much easier said than done with a monster like this staring you down! As I drew he stood at the edge of the trail. I found the old familiar anchor point and loosed. The arrow thunked home and he flopped 5yards away!!!

Haha ok so maybe he's not that big lol but it was a blast. Both my boys had a blast helping to skin him out. I missed a couple more before getting this shot, but this was probably the most fun hunt I've had all year. It's easy to get wrapped up in big game but squirrels are a blast.may try to slip out again this evening to see if I can get another one or two.

Nice shooting, I love hunting the mighty tree rat!

johnnyk71

the ones in my yard are starting to snicker and say unkind things.   :biglaugh:

I will say my shots are at least 25-30 yards, though. perhaps one will get a tad too cocky before long. I have given a couple of them a shave on the way by. missing a squirrel at 30 by 1/2" makes a fella feel good about the deer, too!

Awesome shot. I looked close thought maybe it was a spike.

Good shooting, I shot one this past weekend and it's been a few years since I shot one with my bow.  Felt like a kid again getting all excited.  Look forward to seeing more "monster bucks"...

Chasin tree rats is a great way to spend some time out in the woods, good shot to bring that monster down!

Nice job 816. I've got  instructions for a great squirrel pot pie if you're interested.

I went back out this evening with my oldest son who was very excited. Within five min of being in the woods I shot another out of a tree, this one hit the ground and booked it! My son and I looked for it everywhere we could think to look, but I think it either made it up a tree out of sight, or in a giant tangle of vines that was just behind the tree. I'm not super pleased with these rubber blunts I've got, but I have some "hammer" blunts on the way from three rivers archery. It felt horrible to not retrieve that squirrel. Especially being my sons first hunt. But he did get excited enough to want to go some more this week so hopefully we'll have some more luck.

Boil meat from two old tree rats(young ones fry up too tasty). Combine: meat, 16 oz bag of frozen vegies(your choice), one can of Campbell's Mushroom and Roasted Garlic soup. In a pie dish place Pillsbury pie crust. Pour filling into crust. Top with other crust. Pinch edges, pierce top. 350 degrees for a half hour +/- til top is a little brown. Season to taste.
Doesn't have to be two, but I like pies with something to sink my teeth into   ;)

I purposely didn't look ahead and look at the picture. I read the story THEN I scrolled down! You had me fooled.  AHAHAHAHAHAHA. But very cool!

Achigan- thanks, I'll put that to use very soon.

Just my humble opinion but I would definitely go with a more forceful head over the rubber blunt.  Squirrels are very tough.  There are plenty of threads on here about that.  Some guys will only use broadhead because of experiences like yours even with metal blunts.

All this talk is making me think I need to go do a squirrel only hunt though.  They are fun!
