Interesting thread.

As time goes on, I'm becoming more of an opportunist with my hunting.  Just Sunday I was setting up a ground blind where I told myself it would be much, much better if I were elevated about 3 feet - because of the brush.  So, I'm putting in a treestand at 3 feet next week.  Some other guys are going to laugh, for sure.

And, why not 10 feet or 12 feet?  Well, neither the tree nor the amount of cover is conducive to 10 or 12 feet in that location.

Yes..  My go to stand in the river bottom is only 7 feet up a very top bushy tree...

I have been successful hunting out of 7 foot tall tripods(7 ft. to the seat)sitting down. Back cover is very important, as is playing the wind. I also took a nice 9 point TX buck working a scrape. I was standing on a lock on stand set about 4 ft off the ground in wind damaged tree. The deer was about 6 foot from the base of the tree. The scrape was separated from my stand by a cedar bush growing right next to my stand. Now that was a rush. Never thought he would turn his head when he stepped from behind the cedar to survey the surrounding area. Talk about up close and personal. Give it a try. Good luck and good shooting.

I have my boy set up about 7' off the ground in the "V" of two trees. Good cover behind him and decent cover in front. Saturday is Indiana youth season, I hope to be able to give a full and successful report!

I have used my home swing seat from 2' to 20'. I like being able to position myself behind the tree and ease out for a shot. I've used a Treesling also.

I want to try this tactic in area that I hunt but the problem is when the deer start moving good it's hard to tell where the deer will come from. The wind is going to be the biggest issue.

The stand now 20 ft and the down wind area is downhill so it's not so bad. I did notice that if I would lower it to five ft I would end up with more shooting opportunities.

I do like they challenge though.

Yep that and the top section of ladderstands in heavy cover work great.  Taken a bunch of pigs that way.

Yes, I  usually  spot and  stalk,  but  on  my  back  is a Loc on Lite, two lone wolf  climbing  sticks,  gets  me  up  about 10- 12 feet. It's  light  enough  to  carry  while I  am  stalking through  the  woods,  and  doesn't get in the way.

Good  luck

Bowhunting is not just a way of life, it is also fun.

used to have a really low ladder stand (maybe 8 feet) set up in a big magnolia tree. worked great in early season with all those big leaves still on the tree.

i would think on a big cedar or similar, that setup would be great.

Funny but there was just a article in a magazine about treestand height. A lot of people are going lower.

I normally hunt from the ground but when I use a tree stand I don't go more than 10 feet up the tree. As long as you keep the wind to your face and the noise down deer will walk right by you. Good Luck

My uncle had a little 8ft. ladder stand and he killed several nice bucks out of it.

I do something close to that.

I am a paraplegic so I need to hunt off of an ATV ,so I set up with some camo cloth behind me and a small tree in front.

Once I am in place the only thing that moves are my eyes

It is a hard way to hunt but I have been lucky twice !!!!!    :bigsmyl:

Several years ago I packed in my hang-on for an afternoon hunt.  When I got to my spot I realized I forgot my bag of strap on steps, so I hung the stand about 3' up.  Took a nice doe as she walked by.

I've used the top section of a ladder before when the situation was right. Had good low cover bt couldnt see anything if you went too high.  Never killed a deer from it although I missed my first ever and saw 100's more from it I could have peed on.

I just kick the leaves away so I can be quiet and sit on a cushion on the ground with a big tree behind me to lean on. IF it fools a turkeys eyes, and it does, a deer wont see you.

You do have to learn how to shoot sitting on the ground though, because you wont get away with trying to stand up.
