Jason, I believe it is Wenge. Seems like they started calling Wenge maybe 10 years ago or so. Not positive, but I think that's the case. As you know, I shoot a Super Necedah from that same time frame and it shoots great. Yes, I would work it slowly up to full draw to make sure it has no problems, but if you get it there, it should be fine.

This bow is looking like a gem in the ruff. I was a little worried it wouldn't come very clean but After some major elbow greese its lookin great.
couple of pics of what I was able to get done tonight.
A nice soft wash with just some warm water and a couple different sponges to scrub with.
These played very difficult to remove. Won't need these with some new Bow hush Coming in the mail.

You make me proud young man. It is indeed a Shakespeare Necedah, and a beauty. This is what real archery is about.

Nice work. I do not know but do not think it is wenge, wenge is a deep chocolate color almost black, never seen any that light. Pretty wood though.

Benge- Guibourtia arnolda- West Africa
Wenge- Millettia laurentii- Central Africa
Two different woods, from what I could find on a web search, the wood in this bow looks like Benge.
Just though some would like to know.

Here's an article about putting old bows back into service and how to avoid blowing them up.
