That nail point is wicked... I was curious whether from other's pics, if you guys were using 2 fletch, but I see in yours, you made it 3 fletch...

The reason we like feathers is because they fold in on themselves, and so don't deflect the arrow very much when they contact the shelf or riser.  I would imagine duct tape is more like a plastic vane, and so you would have to be more careful about clearance, unless you have figured out a way to get it to fold in like a feather?

Greetings. Yes was just inquiring if they would be ok to use in formal competitions...just curious. I don't see any problems if I use them during the monthly club shoot, but international rules may be against it. Not intending to compete at that level.

The points are often used by the mountain inhabitants here in the Phils. called Aetas.

Looks like some of my arrows.  Here locally feathers are a buck each (so one arrow's fletching is 3 dollars) and vanes are about the same.  I could drive an hour and a half for stuff, but I'm not seeing significantly better prices there.  Online I'd have to order enough to make shipping worth it, so I just use tape, with the exception of three arrows I two fletched with Hobby Lobby feathers, which are not holding up that well.  Asking acquaintances for the wings of turkeys they have killed has resulted in requests for $50 or more.  Tape is cheap and works just fine.

I was thinking that got lost in the shuffle...your question about competition. I have never been in a trad competition---never will.

Perhaps the Shooter's Forum would have more competitors...or Bisch or someone might pick up on this and answer that question...

duct tape is one thing, but I would suggest upgrading to Gorilla tape, it is tougher stuff and sticks better.

duct tape can fold down if you put slits in it. a while ago i made 1/2 dozen flu flus with tape and slit them so the wold fold like feathers and actually worked pretty good for getting the squirrels and crows in the tree tops..another added bonus i found was they were sorta reflective so a flash light would glimmer off them at night to find strays. been a while since ive done that but i do use it for cresting/wrapping my arrows and does its job well. as the old saying goes if aint broke dont fix it..

I shoot 3D tournaments nearly every weekend from January thru September. As far as I know, in all the places I shoot, there would be no rules against using the duct tape fletches. I have seen a few guys use plastic fletches at different shoots.

Of course, the best thing to do would be to check the rules of the organization or club where you want to shoot to make sure there would be no problems.

I just saw your link with the pics of your arrows. I like those fletchings. I think you did a great job and connot see why those would be against the rules anywhere where I shoot. The only rule about fletching that this may not adhere to is that IBO rules say you cannot have fletches less than 4" in length.

Thank you for the insight on the competitive side. I'm glad you liked the sample. Will be building 2 dozen arrows soon from the shafts pictured and will make the fletchings at 4".

Not really sure why since there are no competitions here for trad or longbow but it just interests me.
