Newbie - First Post

Hi All,
I found this site a few months ago, finally getting a minute to drop a line and say hi.  

I'm a longtime bow hunter who has shot mostly compound with release, but completely instinctive.   After my most recent compound became out of commission, I've decided to make the leap and go full traditional.  

A good friend of mine built me an Osage (I think) long bow.   At this point, I'm at a complete loss for getting it setup.    

Any suggestions on where I attach the arrow rest?   This thing is completely raw, and 63 7/16" long (unstrung).

My friend shoots them without a rest using his hand, but I'd like to maintain some kind of consistency at first.   Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Ask your friend where he intended the arrow pass to be-it can vary, you can then glue something there. A golf tee cut in half works-whatever. Good to see you here and all the best.

Look into a floppy rest. There should be a thread here somewhere. Mickey lotz posted the thread way back when.

It sounds like your starting off with a selfbow and it is my experience that those dudes are super quiet.

Thanks for all of the warm welcomes.  I'm in Southern MD (Chesapeake Beach) and unfortunately I am within bow range of many corrupt politicians...starting with our Governor!  Anyway...

Attempt #2 at some pictures:









It is a self-bow so I know I'm jumping right into the deep end, but I since I've been shooting compound instinctively for years, I'm hoping it'll help ease the pain at bit.

Unfortunately, my friend who built it isn't much for any type of tech specs.  I asked him where to setup for a rest and he told me where ever I want.  HA!  He also picks up whatever old arrow he finds in the garage and brings home a deer every year.  Amazing stuff.  

I did some research and most people recommend putting the arrow rest about 2" above center.   I figured that's where I start and play with it from there.  

Any recommendations on what I clean/treat this thing with to keep it from drying out too much?

Welcome to the gang! I'll defer any advice about selfbows to the guys that shoot them.
