NIGEL01

It's October 18th in a central Minnesota swamp and the rain is tapping on the tin roof of our little shack, the first rain we've got in two months. In the morning I'll be sitting a stand I set up a week ago tight to a bedding area.

NIGEL01

October 19th my brother and I wake to a warm damp morning.  My brothers enthusiasm isn't as high as mine as his cloths are still damp from his sit the evening before.

NIGEL01

As he lays in bed moaning I notify him that I'm out the door at 6!  Our trek through the swamp is uneventful due to the drought, but the grass is still wet.  We're able to get to our stands without a sound.  The wind is perfect for my new stand and my brother will be sitting only 75 yards away in another stand.  Soon after slipping up the tree and getting settled I feel the wind pick up and a drop of rain on my hat.  Not long after both rain and wind pick up.  My earlier announcement to my brother of a 10 am meeting sounds FAR away.

By eight o'clock I'm feelin like it isn't going to happen today.  For sure the big guys I got on the camera are safe in bed by now.  Eight thirty I heard a "snap" and slowly stand.  To the south I see a horizontal movment through the vertical world.  It's a year and half "Y" buck scooting into his bedding area out of range.  I decide 9 o'clock is going to be it.

8:45 I turn to see a perfect year and half old eight point walking out of the willows.  Its the same buck my brother has run into on a couple of occasions as he was exiting his stand.  My first broad side shot I hesitate remembering the big boys on the camera, but I passed up 4 deer the weekend before and I just couldn't pass a perfect shot. When he stepped into my next clear shooting lane I drew, mouth grunted and let fly.  The 1972 K-Mag spit the Razorhead right where it was suppose to.  The buck spead off leaving the arrow behind.  30 yards later his hind legs wavered, 40 yards later he was down for good and still in plain site.  I gave him fifteen minutes, texted my brother "got him".  I was tickled.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.
