I simply won't climb into a tree stand when I'm hunting alone anymore. Too much cover available on the ground. I have several tree stands I enjoy sitting when my son and I go out. At 72 years old and one foot on a banana peel, I'm going to try real hard to make sure I can get out in the woods another 10 years. After that, I'll rent some good videos and sit in my Lazyboy. 'Till then, call me ultra cautious.

This reminder is SO important.  A good friend of mine used a climber stand to ascend an oak tree 2 years ago.  He thought was I will strap in when I get to the height I will be hunting from.  He reached that height, stood up on the platform and before he could attach his harness the stand released.  He road the stand to the ground (fell 20') landed on his feet and then rolled down hill.  To this day walking/hunting is a struggle.  It just is not worth the risk/loss of life /loss of quality of life!!

Thanks to all for this needed reminder..... season starts Monday in NY.

Always wear a full body harness any time your feet are off the ground!

Two hunters have died this week in Pa from tree stand falls.

I have a hunch it's only gonna be a matter of time before hunting in trees becomes against the law, insurance companies are not going to keep paying for this. I'm guessing when our new health insurance kicks in is when it will be made illegal.

I know of three hunters now who have died from falls the past week... Two in Pa and one in Illinois.
