XXL silver flame on hogs/short version

Had a window to run down with my buddy Jet to pig hunt two days last week. I'd shot two turkeys with this 1 7/8" siverflame that Joebuck gave me and wanted to try it out on a pig.

Got to camp late monday night and slept in tue am. fed the road and hung out till early afternoon when Nick G arrived and ate a quick lunch. the weather was iffy and storms were predicted.

It was thundering in the distance when I headed in to my stand. As I got close, I went into super sneak mode because this time of year the pigs like to lay right by the feeders waiting for them to go off. As I got to the bottom of my tree, I saw something twitch over in the shade. a quick look through my binos comfirmed that it was a pig hanging out in the shade waiting. I  got to looking closer and there were four. Had about   15 min to wait before the feeder was scheduled to go off.

about 5 min later one of the pigs (about 95lber) deciced to go get a drink of water under the feeder. Big mistake on his part. I heard him fall and flop around a few seconds. I then climbed up into the stand to wait for the feeder to go off.

5 min later thunder and wind whipping up , I decided to forgo my thoughts of a double and got down and got my pig and hightailed it back to camp to get the meat on ice. This head is devastating to say the least. I know they are not cheap and guys been killin stuff with other heads a third of the price but  , I got two turkeys and two hogs (next story) with this same head. Good steel and easy to get back really dangerous.

I guess this has turned into the long version. next afternoon I sneak into a feeder/stand right beside the bacon strip. 95 degees and I'm thinking I must be crazy. Same thing. Pigs there waiting. when feeder went  off  pigs were everywhere. I picked out the bigest and just as I came to anchor a 40lber ran right in front of him. by the time the little guy moved the big boy (really Only about 150lbs) had turned hard quartering away. I saw my arrow disappear into his arm pit. Dead pig I thought as the whole herd blasted out of there. When I took up the trail blood was good but after 50yds I decided to back out . In my limited experiance, if I don't find em in 50 yards, they might be dead but not yet. I gave it an hour and when I took the trail back up the blood was great, however after 150+ more yards of crawling the blow flies had beat me to the hog. The eggs they layed were already starting to crawl. I said a few choice words and crawed out. My knees were so bloody from crawling through the trail that my buds thought i'd feel down and got cut.

anyway not many pics from trying to beat the rain and flies but did snap one of the exit of my first pig at the cleaning station. cut the offside leg bone in half.

i made a less than ideal shot on one last Sunday with a 180grain SF XL.  Waited an hour an found him under a blowdown about 75 yards away.  They are great heads.
Nice pig Don and they work great on deer also!

what do Blow flies do?  Just lay a ton of maggots?

Don. Great story. What is your bow/arrow set up. How many # and what arrow weight?

The name blow-fly comes from an older English term for meat that had eggs laid on it, which was said to be fly blown.  The female blow-fly typically lays 150-200 eggs per batch.  Hatching from an egg to the first larval stage takes about 8 hours to one day.
Not good for meat.

Dakota Pro Recurve 50@28 full length axis 500  466gn overall. All shots on the ground and just under 15yds. Heads are extremly sharp.  I draw just a tad over 28. Neither  shot was a in the dirt on the other side pass through but did get two holes in the hogs and I saved my head. Also neither of the hogs had much of a shield.

All I use for day to day is the GK XL's (1 1/2"). I do have a couple of the big ones that I only use for turkey hunting. They are GREAT heads!

Also, on several occasions I have spent WAY more time looking for my broadhead then I did looking for the animal I had shot. The cost makes you look real hard to try to recover the BH too!
